Best Dive Log App for Technical Divers (Deco, Gas Mixes, CCR)

Most dive log apps are built around a single recreational profile: one tank, one gas, one no-decompression limit. Technical diving breaks that model, and a log built for beginners quietly loses the data that matters most to a tech diver.

Can a dive log app track gas mixes and deco stops?

Some can, most can't beyond a single nitrox percentage. Subsurface, the open-source app popular with the tech-diving community, handles multiple gas switches per dive and imports full decompression profiles from Shearwater and other tech-focused computers. Diveity's logbook currently tracks one gas mix per dive (air, EAN32, EAN36, or trimix) plus a free-form notes field and JSON depth profile, which covers basic nitrox and trimix logging but doesn't yet offer a dedicated multi-gas or staged-deco entry builder. If gas switching mid-dive is central to how you log, Subsurface is the stronger fit today.

What fields does a tech diver need beyond recreational logs?

  • Multiple gas mixes per dive, with switch depths and bottom/deco gas distinctions

  • Decompression stop times and depths, since max depth and total duration alone say almost nothing about the actual profile

  • Equipment configuration (backmount, sidemount, or CCR), since it changes gas planning entirely

  • Surface interval and repetitive-dive tracking tight enough to matter for decompression obligation, beyond the recreational no-fly timing most logs stop at

A log that only asks for "max depth" and "bottom time" throws away most of what makes a tech dive worth reviewing afterward.

How to log multi-tank or staged decompression dives?

Dive-computer import is the practical path: a Shearwater, Suunto EON, or similar computer records the full profile, including gas switches and deco stops, and Subsurface (or a comparable dedicated tech-log tool) imports that profile directly rather than asking you to hand-type stop times. Manual entry works for the summary numbers, but it loses the stop-by-stop detail a computer captures automatically.

FAQ

Does Diveity support technical dive logging? Partially. Diveity logs a single gas mix per dive (including trimix), max/average depth, and free-form notes, which is enough for a mixed recreational-and-tech logbook. It doesn't yet handle multi-gas switches, staged deco stops, or CCR-specific fields as structured data, so divers doing serious technical diving should pair it with, or use instead, a dedicated tool like Subsurface for the technical side.

Is dive computer data import accurate enough for tech logs? Generally yes for depth, time, and gas-switch events, since that's read directly from the computer's own recorded profile rather than re-entered by hand. Deco-obligation calculations still depend on the algorithm your computer used, so cross-check anything safety-critical against the computer itself, not the imported log.

Can I log CCR (rebreather) dives at all right now? Not with dedicated CCR fields in most consumer log apps, Diveity included. Some tech divers work around this with the notes field for setpoint and diluent details until dedicated CCR support exists; Subsurface has partial CCR import support depending on the unit.
