Dive Sites and Marine Life
W Maldives is strategically located in the heart of the North Ari Atoll, providing easy access to some of the Maldives' most renowned dive sites.
- House Reef: The resort boasts an award-winning 2 km house reef (Travel + Leisure Asia "Best House Reef" 2025) that wraps around the west and north sides of the island. Accessible directly from many villas, it's a vibrant underwater world teeming with marine life. Divers and snorkelers can regularly encounter reef sharks (whitetip, blacktip, grey), turtles (hawksbill, green), eagle rays, snappers, sturgeon species, red-tooth triggerfish, and large schools of reef fish. Night manta gatherings are also known to occur in Fesdu Lagoon.
- Fesdu Wreck: This signature North Ari dive site is a 30-meter steel fishing trawler intentionally sunk in the 1980s. Resting upright on a sandy slope at a maximum depth of 30 m, the wreck is completely overgrown with hard and soft corals, sponges, and gorgonian fans. It's a haven for massive schools of cardinalfish, moray eels, groupers, trevally, and barracuda, with opportunities for wreck penetration for certified divers.
- Maaya Thila: Often cited as one of the world's top dive sites, Maaya Thila is a circular pinnacle rising from 40 m to just 6 m below the surface. Known as the "White Tip Reef Shark Capital," it's famous for its resident grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks, as well as turtles, barracudas, lionfish, moorish idols, fusiliers, and moray eels. The site features steep drop-offs, overhangs, and caves, with visibility typically between 15-30 m. It's suitable for intermediate to advanced divers due to moderate to strong currents.
- Fish Head (Mushimasmingili Thila): A protected marine area, Fish Head is a legendary dive site renowned for its large resident population of grey reef sharks, often seen in spectacular "shark walls." This circular thila rises from 30-35 m to about 10 m below the surface, featuring steep walls, overhangs, and caves. Beyond sharks, divers can spot whitetip reef sharks, giant trevallies, Napoleon wrasse, tuna, and schools of fusiliers. Strong currents are common, making it an advanced dive.
- Whale Shark & Manta Excursions: The dive center organizes full-day excursions to the South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area, known for reliable, year-round whale shark sightings.
