Overview

Established in 2011, Maafushi Dive & Water Sports is a PADI Five Star IDC Dive Center located on Maafushi, a vibrant local island in the South Malé Atoll, Maldives. This Ministry-licensed center is conveniently situated close to the beach, making it easily accessible for guests staying in Maafushi's guesthouses and hotels. Owned and operated by professionals with over 15 years of experience in diving, water sports, and tourism, Maafushi Dive is committed to providing rewarding adventures with high-quality equipment and expert staff who possess extensive local knowledge of the dive sites. The center is also dedicated to environmental protection, aligning with Project AWARE by PADI, and promotes sustainable diving habits, including a "No glove policy" during dives and banning single-use plastics on its premises and boats.

Certification Courses

Maafushi Dive & Water Sports offers a comprehensive range of PADI certification courses, catering to all levels from beginners to aspiring professionals. For those new to diving, the Discover Scuba Diving experience provides an introduction to the underwater world, allowing participants to explore a reef under the guidance of an instructor without needing prior certification. The full PADI curriculum is available, including the PADI Open Water Diver certification, which typically takes 4 days and includes eLearning, instruction, and four open water dives.

Further certifications include the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, PADI Adventure Diver, and PADI Rescue Diver courses. For those looking to pursue diving professionally, Maafushi Dive is a PADI Five Star IDC (Instructor Development Course) Center, offering the full range of professional training up to PADI Divemaster and IDC. They also provide PADI Freediving courses and Emergency First Responder (EFR) training. All courses include necessary PADI student materials, equipment rental, boat charges, and certification fees, with e-learning options available for convenience.

Guided Diving & Dive Sites

The dive center organizes daily boat trips to explore the diverse dive sites of South Malé Atoll. These excursions typically include two dives in the morning (from 08:30 to 12:30) and an optional single afternoon dive (from 14:30 to 16:30). Night dives are also frequently organized. Dive sites are selected based on weather conditions, currents, and visibility, ensuring optimal diving experiences.

South Malé Atoll is renowned for its thrilling channel dives (locally known as "kandus"), vibrant thilas (underwater pinnacles), and intriguing wrecks. Popular dive sites accessible from Maafushi include:

• Embudhoo Kandu: A marine reserve famous for large populations of white tip and grey reef sharks, often experienced as a drift dive.
• Kandooma Thila: Considered one of the best dive sites in South Malé Atoll, known for strong currents and abundant fish life, including pelagics.
• Cocoa Thila (Cocoa Corner): A revered dive site offering diverse fish life, though current-dependent.
• Kuda Giri Wreck: A popular wreck dive suitable for various experience levels, now an artificial reef teeming with marine life.
• Guraidhoo Kandu South: Often highlighted for its impressive fish life and photographic opportunities, featuring intricate gorgonians and whip corals.
• Vadhoo Caves: Offers interesting reef formations with walls covered in sponges and soft corals, and small caves.
• Villivaru Giri: A submerged pinnacle near Maafushi, offering vibrant coral formations and frequent sightings of hawksbill turtles, moray eels, and white-tip reef sharks.

During the manta season, typically from late July to early November, the center organizes trips to seasonal manta sites, offering divers the magical experience of encountering these graceful animals. The water temperature in South Malé Atoll generally ranges between 26°C and 29°C, with visibility between 10 and 30 meters, making for excellent year-round diving conditions.

Equipment & Facilities

Maafushi Dive & Water Sports provides a comprehensive range of high-quality rental equipment, ensuring divers have everything needed for a safe and enjoyable experience. This includes full dive equipment sets with tanks (aluminum and steel, including small 10L cylinders), weights, belts, fins (full-foot and open-heel), masks, snorkels, BCDs, regulators, dive computers, and wetsuits (shorty and 3mm). Specialized gear such as compasses, flashlights, and underwater cameras are also available for rent. All equipment is annually serviced to ensure safety standards. Nitrox fills are available for certified divers.

The dive center features modern facilities, including two state-of-the-art air-conditioned classrooms, hot water shower facilities, restrooms, changing rooms, and locker services. Free Wi-Fi is also available. The center operates its own dive boats (dhonis), which can comfortably accommodate divers and are equipped with sun decks for relaxation between dives. They also offer a house reef dive, accessible directly from the shore, perfect for certified divers seeking a convenient yet captivating experience among colorful corals and diverse marine life.

Beyond diving, Maafushi Dive & Water Sports offers a wide array of water sports activities, including jet skiing, parasailing, fun tube rides, banana boat rides, kayaking, and kitesurfing with rental equipment. Location & Logistics

Maafushi Island, located in the South Malé Atoll, is a popular local-tourism destination known for its affordable accommodation options and authentic Maldivian experience. The island is easily accessible from Velana International Airport (Malé) via public ferry (approximately 90 minutes) or speedboat (30-45 minutes). Upon arrival at Maafushi harbor, the dive center is a short walk or taxi ride away, conveniently located on Miskiy Magu Road near the beach. The center operates daily from 08:00 AM to 10:00 PM and offers services in English. All dive prices include boat trips, dive guide, and equipment rental, with no hidden costs.
