Located on the north-west outer edge of the Apo Reef plateau, near Binangaan Islet and its historic lighthouse, this dive site is a highlight for experienced divers seeking thrilling pelagic encounters.

Apo Reef Natural Park itself is a globally significant marine protected area, recognized as the world's second-largest contiguous coral reef system and the largest in the Philippines, covering 34 km². It was designated an ASEAN Heritage Park in 2024, underscoring its regional importance for conservation.

Diving Conditions and Site Features

• Difficulty: This is an advanced dive site, recommended for divers with sufficient experience.
• Certification Required: An Advanced Open Water certification is required to explore Shark Ridge.
• Depth: Divers will find a sloping reef with sandy patches, typically ranging from 10 m to 35 m. The wall here can drop to much greater depths, requiring careful depth management to avoid decompression obligation.
• Current: Expect strong currents, which are a defining feature of this outer-edge dive site. These currents are precisely what attract the abundant marine life that makes Shark Ridge famous.
• Temperature: The water temperature at Apo Reef generally ranges between a comfortable 26°C and 30°C.
• Site Types: Shark Ridge offers a dynamic combination of reef, drift, pinnacle, and drop-off diving. The site features vibrant coral formations, including small caverns and gorgonian fans, providing excellent opportunities for macro life spotting, such as the longnose hawkfish.
• Hazards: The primary hazards at Shark Ridge are the strong currents and the potential for decompression obligation due to depth. We recommend meticulous dive planning and adherence to your dive computer.

Marine Life Encounters

As its name suggests, Shark Ridge is a prime location for shark sightings. Divers can reliably encounter Whitetip Reef Sharks resting on the sandy bottom, along with cruising Blacktip Reef Sharks and occasional Grey Reef Sharks.

Beyond the sharks, this dive site is a magnet for pelagic species. We often encounter majestic Reef Manta Rays, particularly from November to May. Keep a keen eye on the blue for the elusive Scalloped Hammerhead Shark, which are more frequently sighted between November and March. Large schools of Bigeye Barracuda, jacks, and tuna are also common, adding to the exhilarating experience.

Best Time to Dive

While Apo Reef can be dived year-round, the best conditions, with calmer seas and excellent visibility, are typically experienced during the dry season from January to April. For the highest chances of encountering manta rays and hammerheads, we recommend planning your visit between November and May.
