Known as a vibrant drift, reef, and muck dive, this channel is a favorite among novice divers and macro photographers alike, offering both breathtaking wide-angle scenery and a treasure trove of hidden critters.

The Dive Experience

Divers will find themselves gently carried by a moderate current, making for an exhilarating drift dive experience, especially when timed with the ebbing tide. The dive site typically ranges in depth from 5 to 18 meters, with a maximum depth that can reach up to 24 meters, making it accessible for Open Water certified divers. The water temperature in Puerto Galera generally hovers between 26°C and 30°C year-round, averaging around 27.5°C, ensuring comfortable diving conditions.

Underwater Landscape and Marine Life

As you drift along, you'll discover a truly unique underwater landscape. Divers will encounter abundant and unusual coral and sponge formations, often described as a surreal lunar landscape. Keep an eye out for giant pink Barrel Sponges (Xestospongia testudinaria) and mushroom-shaped rock formations adorned with dense green tree corals and lush fields of soft corals.

The Batangas Channel is a macro paradise, teeming with an incredible diversity of marine life. Among the sponges and corals, you can encounter the elusive Blue-ribbon Eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita), with its vibrant colors. Divers will also find various species of Network Pipefish (Corythoichthys sp.) and an array of fascinating Frogfish (Antennariidae spp.), known for their expert camouflage. Look closely on the sandy bottom for the distinctive patterns of the Blue-spotted Ribbontail Ray (Taeniura lymma). Beyond these, the dive site is also known for other interesting creatures such as sea horses, ghost pipefish, nudibranchs, and flamboyant cuttlefish, making every dive a potential treasure hunt for photographers.

Important Considerations

While the Batangas Channel is suitable for beginners with an Open Water certification, we recommend being mindful of the moderate currents, which can occasionally be strong if not timed correctly with the tides. A significant hazard at this dive site is surface vessel traffic, as it is an active navigation lane. Divers should always be aware of their surroundings and follow their instructor's guidance regarding safety protocols, particularly during ascent.
