Welcome to Boulders, an exhilarating dive site in Puerto Galera that promises an intricate and exploratory adventure for certified divers. This site is a true labyrinth of massive coral-encrusted rocks, stacked from approximately 5 meters down to a maximum depth of 30 meters on a sandy-gravel bottom, just east of Sabang. Divers will find a fascinating topography riddled with overhangs, tunnels, swim-throughs, and dramatic wall sections, making it a prime location for those who love to explore unique underwater landscapes.
Given its complex structure and potential for disorientation, Boulders is classified as an advanced dive site, requiring an Advanced Open Water certification. We typically encounter moderate currents here, which can add to the thrill but also necessitate good buoyancy control. The water temperature in Puerto Galera generally ranges from 26°C to 30°C year-round, offering comfortable diving conditions.
The intricate rock formations and healthy reef system at Boulders create a rich habitat for diverse marine life. As you navigate through the structure, divers will often encounter the striking Banded Sea Krait (Laticauda colubrina), identifiable by its black bands on a blue-gray body and a distinctive yellow snout. These highly venomous yet generally docile sea snakes are often seen hunting for moray eels in cracks and crevices or resting on land to digest their meals.
Keep an eye out for the vibrant Redtoothed Triggerfish (Odonus niger), known for its deep purple to blue coloration, glowing blue fin margins, and characteristic red teeth. These triggerfish prefer current-swept reef channels and slopes, often feeding on zooplankton and sponges, and can sometimes be seen in schools.
Divers may also spot the iconic Palette Surgeonfish (Blue Tang) (Paracanthurus hepatus), famous for its brilliant blue body, yellow tail, and a black band curving from its eye. These surgeonfish are typically found in areas with strong currents, often in loose aggregations, and may hide among coral branches when startled.
The clever Common Octopus (Octopus vulgaris) is another resident, often seen camouflaged against the rocks or darting between crevices. Puerto Galera is particularly renowned for its cephalopod diversity, including various octopus species that are masters of disguise.
Finally, exercise caution and keen observation to spot the incredibly camouflaged Reef Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa). These masters of disguise blend perfectly with the rocky seafloor, appearing as a stone or piece of coral. They are ambush predators and are among the world's most venomous fish, so maintaining a respectful distance is crucial.
The primary hazards at Boulders include the overhead environment within the swim-throughs and tunnels, which can lead to disorientation, and the potential for depth creep along the deeper outer margins. We strongly recommend staying close to your dive guide and being mindful of your depth and air consumption, especially in the more intricate sections. Proper planning and adherence to your certification limits will ensure a safe and memorable exploration of this captivating dive site.
