Capitancillo Island

Capitancillo Island is a small, uninhabited coral islet located off the coast of Bogo City in northern Cebu, Philippines. It is a protected marine sanctuary spanning approximately 600 hectares, renowned for its pristine waters and diverse underwater ecosystems. The island is identifiable by its distinctive white steel lighthouse, which stands 25 meters (82 feet) high and has guided ships since its construction in 1905, with the current structure dating back to the 1950s.

Capitancillo offers three primary dive sites: Ormoc Shoal, Nuñez Shoal, and the southwest wall, sometimes referred to as Capitancillo Wall. These sites feature shallow reef tops at around 10-15 meters (33-50 feet) that dramatically drop off into deeper walls. The walls are richly adorned with a vibrant array of soft and hard corals, including colorful gorgonians and sea fans, creating a densely inhabited and spectacular underwater landscape. The most unique and deepest part of the site is known as "Rendez-Vous," a gorgeous deep wall that extends beyond 55 meters (180 feet). This makes Capitancillo suitable for divers of all levels, from Open Water to advanced and experienced deep divers, as the dives can start shallow and progress to greater depths.

The dive experience at Capitancillo is characterized by clear waters, often with visibility ranging from 20 to 30 meters. Water temperatures are consistently warm, typically between 26°C and 29°C. However, divers should be prepared for currents, which can range from mild to strong or even fierce in certain areas, particularly at the deeper walls. Due to the potential for strong currents and deeper profiles, some sources recommend Capitancillo for advanced divers. The site is well-known for pelagic species and a wide variety of reef fish. Common sightings include yellowfin tuna, snappers, big groupers, schools of jacks and mackerels, barracudas, and various reef sharks such as white-tip and grey reef sharks. Occasional sightings of manta rays and eagle rays have also been reported. The best season for diving is generally from December to April, with some sources extending this to May, when seas are calmest and visibility is at its best. Access to Capitancillo Island is primarily by boat from various jump-off points in Bogo City, such as Marangog Cove, with boat rides typically lasting 15 to 45 minutes. Day trips are common, and while there are no permanent accommodations or stores on the island, camping is permitted with prior arrangement.
