Cathedral Rock

Overview

Bird's Head Seascape lists Cathedral Rock in eastern Wayag, north of In Island, in the far north of Raja Ampat, and gives a GPS position for it. The map pin follows Bird's Head Seascape's point for the rock itself; the coastline check places it on the shoreline of the rock, not in open water. Raja Ampat Biodiversity Nature Resort names a site called Cathedral among the dive sites of Wayag, together with The Passage and Twin Rocks, and says these sites are known for their dramatic underwater topography. It does not give the site's position, so it is not confirmed that its Cathedral is the same site.

The dive

Bird's Head Seascape's route enters on the rock's east point, where it says to enjoy the fish action, and swims with the reef on the right, heading south around the rock. Divers then descend into a chimney-like hole in the reef that opens into a decorated archway, and continue with the reef on the right to the west side of the rock, where a shallow swim-through bisects the rock. It lists the site for both wide-angle and macro photography.

Conditions

Bird's Head Seascape cautions that the site is prone to strong current. The sources give no depth range, visibility, water temperature, marine life list or minimum certification for the site.
