About This Dive Site
Chocolate Island: reef scenery and small marine life
Chocolate Island is a named dive destination between Malapascua and the northern coast of Cebu. Sea Explorers and Malapascua Exotic describe a reef descending towards sand, while Evolution describes soft corals, small rocky walls and coral-covered boulders. These accounts give the dive a clearer character than a name alone: it is a place operators discuss for reef scenery, close observation and macro photography.
Different descriptions of the terrain
Sea Explorers describes a gentle slope towards a sandy bottom at approximately 18 m, with leather corals, sea fans and sponges. Exotic lists a 3–17 m range for its Chocolate Island dive. Evolution's dive-site page emphasizes shallower topography in the 5–12 m range. These figures describe different features and operator profiles; they do not establish a surveyed minimum and maximum for the whole site. Ask which part of the reef your planned dive will cover.
Evolution's dated 2017 article adds a route account through rubble, walls, slopes and boulders, finishing closer to the island among soft corals. It helps explain why divers might choose different sections for photography, but is historical context rather than a report of today's reef condition. Its depth description should not be used as a current dive plan.
What operators report seeing
Sea Explorers lists seahorses, frogfish, pipefish, nudibranchs, shrimp, crabs and Spanish dancers. Thresher Shark Divers' named Chocolate Island section adds reports of sea snakes, snake eels, morays, cuttlefish, seamoths and juvenile batfish. Evolution also highlights small animals among the coral and rock habitats. These are operator accounts, not a dated sighting list or a guarantee that any animal will be present. They do not establish exact species identities, encounter frequencies or reliable wildlife seasons.
Comparing a day or night visit
Evolution describes Chocolate Island for both day and night diving. That is an operator offering to discuss, not confirmation of a departure on your travel date. Ask about the intended section, lighting conditions, equipment, supervision and entry and exit arrangements. Travel times vary between published accounts and departure points; confirm your own schedule instead of treating an advertised journey time as a timetable.
Location and remaining unknowns
Chocolate Island and North Point are separate names in the reviewed guides. This page does not merge their routes. Location unresolved: the retained source point failed the coastline check because it falls inland, so this partial guide has no map marker or navigation point. Current strength, visibility, seasonal suitability, present access and requirements for your experience remain unverified here. Confirm conditions and the proposed dive with your operator; no local-diver verification has been recorded.
