About This Dive Site
Classroom is a dive name recorded in historical Ticao sources. An archived Ticao Island Resort page describes a site on the western side of Ticao Island, with sand and hard and soft corals. Sea-View Imaging also names a Ticao Island Classroom dive in its Philippines 2016 gallery.
The location is disputed. A 2010 trip report by Mike Bartick in Underwater Photography Guide uses Classroom for an area of the Manta Bowl seamount. It is not established whether these accounts describe the same place or different dives using the same name. This guide does not establish a separate reef or a confirmed boundary with Manta Bowl.
This is a partial guide based on historical naming records. No coordinate or navigation point is supplied. Current access, entry arrangements, depth, visibility, currents and suitability have not been verified; the historical name does not establish that the dive is suitable for training or beginners.
Location unresolved: Historical sources disagree about the location of Classroom. This partial guide has no map marker or navigation point.
What the operator lineage says
The fullest description of Classroom comes from the Ticao Island Resort "Dive spots" page as archived by the Wayback Machine on 1 December 2010. The resort placed "The Classroom" among its San Miguel Island entries and called it a sheltered area on the west side of Ticao Island, named because it was considered an ideal spot for dive courses and for beginners. The page described a big sandy area close to the island, with a good mix of hard and soft coral further away from the main island. It said no big fish were found in the area, only small schools of smaller reef fish, and that the sand was home to gobies, sole fish and other critters sheltering in the white sandy bottom. No depth figure was published for this entry, although the same page gave depths for most of its other sites.
Bicol Dive Center, a Donsol operator, carried a reworded version of the same text on its San Miguel Island page, archived on 30 May 2023. Its wording follows the resort's description closely and adds turtles to the animals living in the sandy area; it also gives no depth. Because that wording derives from the resort's page, the two are one lineage rather than independent accounts. The Shark Diving Philippines travel page that reproduces the resort's other San Miguel entries word for word, captured in October 2026, omits Classroom altogether.
The Manta Bowl account
The conflicting location comes from Mike Bartick's trip report in Underwater Photography Guide, dated 25 November 2010. It quotes the resort divemaster briefing the Manta Bowl: the bowl was described as only a small area of a 40 square hectare seamount, divided into quarters with different names, and "Classroom", "Carlos", "Sweetlips" and the "Manta Bowl" were said to have been discovered approximately 20 years earlier. That report places a Classroom on a current-swept offshore shoal, which does not match the sheltered, sandy training area on the resort's own page. Both accounts come from people connected to the same resort in the same year, so the disagreement cannot be resolved from these sources and is recorded here as it stands.
What remains unverified
No source captured for this guide gives a coordinate, depth range, visibility or seasonal pattern for Classroom, and no directory listing under this name was found for Ticao. The photographer's gallery titled "Ticao Island Classroom dive" from 2016, cited in the existing record, could not be retrieved again for this update, so nothing further from it is added here.
