About This Dive Site
Donsol Bay: whale-shark interaction overview
Donsol Bay in Sorsogon is presented here as a whale-shark interaction area, not as a surveyed reef dive. The Philippine Department of Tourism's Donsol guide identifies the Whale Shark Interaction Center as the starting point for local butanding encounters. Its visitor information describes snorkeling equipment and instructions from a Butanding Interaction Officer, or BIO. This activity should be distinguished from the separately advertised scuba trips to Manta Bowl near Ticao Island.
What the map pin means
The map pin is an approximate town reference for Donsol. It does not identify an offshore encounter, boat boarding point or water entry. Whale sharks move, and the location of an encounter cannot be read from this marker. Confirm the meeting place and boat arrangements directly with the interaction center or your chosen operator before travelling to the shore.
Planning an interaction
The tourism guide describes a natural wildlife interaction policy. Its instructions include following the BIO's directions on when to enter the water, avoiding physical contact with the sharks and avoiding flash photography. Treat the briefing on the day as essential: ask how the group will enter, remain together and return to the boat. Sightings are not guaranteed, and this guide does not provide a verified encounter rate or a forecast for a particular departure.
Before booking, clarify whether the offered activity is a bay snorkeling trip or an offshore scuba itinerary. Ask about swimming expectations, equipment, supervision, weather cancellations and what happens if no whale shark is encountered. The reviewed material does not establish that every participant, child or beginner can safely join every departure; individual suitability needs an assessment by the responsible operator.
Separate from Manta Bowl scuba diving
The Department of Tourism lists guided Manta Bowl scuba trips separately from whale-shark boat activities. Bicol Dive Center also advertises scuba itineraries involving Mantabowl and San Miguel sites. Booking from Donsol therefore does not mean the dives take place in Donsol Bay. Check the actual itinerary before comparing trips or adding a dive to your logbook.
What remains uncertain
This is a source-attributed partial overview. Exact encounter positions, site-wide depth, visibility, current, current fees and departure availability have not been verified here. No universal certification rule or legal scuba prohibition is asserted. Local observations can improve the record, especially precise meeting-point information and clearly dated experience of the interaction program.
Getting to the interaction center
The Department of Tourism describes arrivals through Bicol International Airport in Daraga, near Legazpi, followed by a road transfer to Donsol. It also describes connections through Legazpi Grand Central Terminal and local tricycle travel between Donsol town and the interaction center. These are transport options to discuss when arranging a visit, rather than a confirmed timetable or a transfer included in an encounter booking. Check the final meeting point separately from your accommodation address.
