Wreck · Reef

The East Tangat Gunboat dive site offers an exceptional introduction to wreck diving, making it a favorite for both snorkelers and certified divers in Coron. This approximately 35-40 meter long, 500-ton Japanese auxiliary vessel, often identified as an anti-submarine craft or tug and sometimes referred to as the Tamakaze or Teru Kaze Maru, rests peacefully on a sandy slope, listing hard to starboard, close to the southwest shore of Tangat Island. It is believed to have been scuttled by its crew during the infamous U.S. air raids on September 24, 1944.
Divers will find the East Tangat Gunboat remarkably accessible, with the bow beginning at a mere 3 to 5 meters. The wreck gradually slopes down, reaching a maximum depth of 19 to 22 meters at the stern. This shallow depth ensures the wreck is perpetually sunlit, creating vibrant scenes perfect for underwater photography. Water temperatures in Coron are consistently warm, typically ranging from 26°C to 31°C, making for comfortable diving conditions year-round. While currents are generally mild, we recommend maintaining good buoyancy control, especially if any mild current is present.
Over the decades, the East Tangat Gunboat has transformed into a thriving artificial reef, beautifully overgrown with a variety of soft corals and sponges, including impressive Barrel Sponges. As divers explore, you can encounter an array of colorful marine life. Look out for assorted Butterflyfish, Six-banded Angelfish, and Masked Rabbitfish darting amongst the wreckage. Beyond these, divers may spot schools of small angelfish, groupers, snappers, and even large batfish. Keep an eye out for interesting nudibranchs and other macro critters that call this wreck home. While penetration opportunities are limited due to the wreck's size and layout, the open structure provides ample exploration and macro-photography opportunities in well-lit conditions.
This dive site is ideal for beginners, requiring only an Open Water certification. Its shallow sections also make it a fantastic site for snorkelers to enjoy the historical wreck from the surface. As with any dive site, divers should be aware of potential hazards, including occasional mild currents and the presence of dangerous marine life such as scorpionfish or crocodile fish, so always observe and maintain a respectful distance.
The East Tangat Gunboat offers a unique blend of history, vibrant marine life, and easy access, making it a must-visit dive site in Coron for those seeking a relaxed yet rewarding underwater experience.
