Kalanggaman Island

Kalanggaman Island is an uninhabited island located between Cebu and Leyte in the Philippines, renowned for its pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and a distinctive long sandbar that extends into the sea, shifting with the tides. The island's name is derived from the local word "langgam," meaning bird, as its shape, particularly the sandbar, is said to resemble a bird in flight when viewed from above. It is considered a top tourist destination in Leyte and the entire Eastern Visayas region, attracting both local and international visitors for its natural beauty and serene environment.

Underwater, Kalanggaman Island offers an exceptional diving experience with diverse topography. The southern section of the island features sloping reef walls adorned with both soft and hard corals, providing a habitat for various marine species such as lionfish, moray eels, nudibranchs, and scorpionfish. The northern section boasts spectacular wall dives, richly encrusted with gorgonian fans and giant barrel sponges. Schools of snappers, fusiliers, and anthias are commonly observed congregating off the large drop-offs. These deep walls also present opportunities for encountering larger pelagic species like sharks and rays. The reef starts at approximately 10-12 meters, with some areas gradually sloping to 29 meters before plunging into severe drop-offs exceeding recreational diving limits. The site is known for its excellent visibility, often exceeding 40 meters.

Diving at Kalanggaman Island is generally considered suitable for all levels of divers, from Open Water to Advanced. The calm waters and light breezes also make it ideal for snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding, with vibrant coral reefs just a few meters from the shore. The island itself lacks commercial infrastructure, with no hotels or permanent electricity, encouraging a raw camping experience for those staying overnight. Visitors are advised to bring their own food, water, and essential supplies. The local government of Palompon manages the island and enforces strict rules to preserve its natural beauty, including limiting visitor numbers and prohibiting activities that harm marine life. The best time for diving and visiting is during the dry season, from March to May, or generally from November to May, when sea currents are gentle and underwater visibility is at its clearest. Strong rip currents can form around the sandbars, so it is important to swim only in designated areas and consult with island guides.
