Lankan Manta Point: A Maldivian Manta Spectacle
Prepare for one of the world's most iconic and dependable manta ray encounters at Lankan Manta Point, nestled on the North Malé East Rim. This intermediate dive site is a must-visit for any diver seeking close-up interactions with these majestic pelagics. With an Open Water certification, you can immerse yourselves in a vibrant underwater world centered around a thriving manta cleaning station.
The Dive Experience
Lankan Manta Point is characterized by a gently sloping outer-reef flat, gradually descending from a reef top at around 5-10 meters to a sandy bottom at a maximum depth of 30 meters. Divers will find multiple coral outcrops and bommies that serve as dedicated cleaning stations for Reef Manta Rays (Mobula alfredi). Typically, we position ourselves slightly away from and below these stations, often at depths between 10-15 meters, to observe the incredible spectacle. Here, three to fifteen mantas may gracefully queue and barrel-roll, allowing Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse (Labroides dimidiatus) to remove parasites. It's an eastern/leeward feeding-side site, meaning it truly comes alive during the southwest monsoon, when plankton-rich currents attract large aggregations of mantas.
Beyond the cleaning stations, the dive site offers a dynamic drift experience along the reef, featuring stunning drop-offs and submerged pinnacles (thilas) adorned with vibrant hard and soft corals and beautiful gorgonian sea fans.
Marine Life Encounters
While the Reef Manta Rays are undoubtedly the stars of Lankan Manta Point, divers can encounter a rich diversity of other marine life. Keep an eye out for Whitetip Reef Sharks (Triaenodon obesus) patrolling the sandy bottom. We often spot elegant Spotted Eagle Rays (Aetobatus narinari) gliding past, alongside impressive Great Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda). Look for the distinctive Humphead Wrasse (Napoleon) (Cheilinus undulatus) and the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) gracefully navigating the reef. Schools of bright Bluestripe Snapper (Lutjanus kasmira) add splashes of color, and you might even discover the elusive Giant Moray (Gymnothorax javanicus) peeking from crevices.
Conditions and Best Time to Dive
Lankan Manta Point is an intermediate dive, suitable for divers holding an Open Water certification. The water temperature remains consistently warm, typically ranging from 25-28°C in winter and 27-30°C in summer. Currents here are variable, often mild to moderate, but can occasionally be strong, making good buoyancy control and comfort with drift diving essential.
The prime season for maximizing manta ray encounters is during the southwest monsoon, from May to November. This period brings nutrient-rich waters and plankton blooms to the eastern side of North Malé Atoll, attracting large numbers of mantas. Daily sightings are common from mid-August through November. While visibility might be slightly lower due to the plankton during this peak season, the sheer number of mantas makes it an unforgettable experience.
Hazards
As with many Maldivian dive sites, divers should be aware of variable currents, which can sometimes be strong. We also advise caution regarding boat traffic, especially given its proximity to Malé. While most marine life is docile, we recommend maintaining a respectful distance from potentially dangerous marine life such as stingrays (if provoked), lionfish, and stonefish, as well as fire coral.
