About This Dive Site

Ligid Caves, Samal

Ligid Caves is a named dive location in the Samal area of Davao Gulf. PADI's entry, credited to South Shore Divers, describes submerged rock formations, caverns and tunnels, with boat access and a recommendation for a local guide.

Depth and route uncertainty

The PADI page is internally inconsistent: its narrative gives 40 metres, while its maximum-depth field gives 30 metres. Neither number is established here as a verified limit. Asia Dive Site separately describes cave features at 17–20 metres northeast of Samal; a feature depth is not necessarily the maximum extent of the site.

Before booking, establish the exact site and whether the proposed route stays in open water or enters an overhead environment. The name alone does not establish a route's training or equipment requirements. This partial guide provides no cave-navigation instructions and does not establish that an Advanced Open Water qualification is sufficient for penetration.

Current access, route geometry, entry conditions and guide arrangements remain unverified. Descriptions of marine life elsewhere around Samal should not be treated as sightings at this particular location.

What dated visitors recorded

Dive Happy's Davao feature, first printed in Scuba Diver AustralAsia in 2008 and republished online in July 2009, places Big Ligid and Little Ligid on the north-eastern tip of Samal and calls Big Ligid one of Davao's signature sites. It describes craggy limestone walls above water and, below, a cave hollowed out of Ligid's wall with a pinnacle off its furthest point. In that account the vertical wall drops at around 20 metres and the cave is a large triangular gap at its base; a torchlit look at the cave floor turned up vibrant nudibranchs, and the writer saw clouds of golden fish hovering over emerald green coral on the wall itself. The same article says Big Ligid offers Davao's best chance of roving pelagics such as packs of barracuda and whitetip sharks riding the currents.

Asia Dive Site's Samal page, fetched in October 2026, describes the caves as split into two at between 17 and 20 metres with a diverse range of coral and gorgonians, profuse smaller fish life and the occasional sighting of sharks. The SSI destination guide for Davao and Samal, read in October 2026, says that at Ligid Island a vibrant reef drops down to two limestone caves where divers can make their way through interesting passageways. These are three separate descriptions of a cave at Ligid; only one of them uses the name Ligid Caves as PADI does, and this guide does not assert that they describe one identical route.

Names and conditions around Ligid

Spellings vary across sources: Dive Happy writes Big Ligid and Little Ligid, Asia Dive Site writes Ligid Caves, a Davao Today list of November 2005 includes Ligid Island (spelled Ligid Islad there) among dive spots 45 to 120 minutes from the city, and a SunStar report of 21 June 2022 and a SEAFDEC-indexed news item on the 2022 Samal Dive Fest name a newly introduced site called Ligid D or Ligid Dako. Whether Ligid Dako is the same place as Ligid Caves is not established here. For general conditions, Dive Happy reported turbid, silty water with an average visibility of around 10 metres in Davao Gulf and the occasional strong current that can turn a dive into an impromptu drift; it added that the currents at Big Ligid also improve the visibility there. Those are that writer's observations on dated visits, not a forecast for your trip.

Hazards & Safety

Be aware of these potential hazards at this dive site

Current

Severity: Medium

Moderate currents may be encountered, particularly when entering or exiting the caverns.

Overhead environment

Severity: High

Diving in an overhead environment means there is no direct route to the surface, requiring specialized training and careful navigation. Staying close to a guide and maintaining a clean line through the caves is crucial. Risk of getting lost or disoriented.

Silting

Severity: Medium

Avoid stirring sediment to maintain visibility and prevent disorientation within the cave system.

Falling objects

Severity: Low

Rockfall is a possibility, and divers should be aware of unstable structures within the cave. Always wear a helmet.

Boat traffic

Severity: Low

Boat traffic at the surface is a consideration for entry and exit. Always carry a surface marker buoy.

Depth

Severity: High

The maximum depth of 40 meters makes it suitable for advanced divers, requiring proper certification and experience to manage decompression obligations.
