About This Dive Site
Manta Bowl: offshore scuba near Ticao Island
Manta Bowl is an offshore seamount near Ticao Island, Masbate. LAMAVE's 2020 Manta Bowl Research and Conservation Project profile describes a manta cleaning station and a research program studying rays and their use of the area. Bicol Dive Center advertises Mantabowl in its scuba-diving itinerary, while the Philippine Department of Tourism's Donsol guide lists Manta Bowl as a separate scuba excursion from the bay's whale-shark interaction activity.
Why divers visit
LAMAVE's historical research account describes reef manta rays around the shoal and less frequent oceanic manta observations. It explains the importance of photo-identification and habitat research for understanding the animals. These are documented research observations, not a promise that a particular species will appear on a booked dive. This guide does not turn the profile's historical language about frequency into present-day encounter odds.
Conditions and experience
The 2020 research profile repeatedly discusses strong currents and prolonged time at sea. Its Advanced Open Water and logged-dive requirements were criteria for research volunteers, not a universal published admission rule for visiting divers. They should not be copied into a general certification requirement. Ask the operator to assess your recent experience against the planned route and the conditions expected for your departure.
Before committing to a trip, ask about the dive briefing, current assessment, entry and recovery arrangements, and the alternative plan if conditions are unsuitable. Confirm equipment and support requirements with the operator. The historical research description is useful context for these questions, but it cannot establish today's current strength, visibility or weather.
Booking the right itinerary
Bicol Dive Center's product page combines Mantabowl with San Miguel dive sites and asks customers to check group availability. Its advertised package is evidence that the operator offers this destination, not confirmation of a departure on your dates. Confirm which sites are planned, whether Manta Bowl is conditional on weather, what equipment is included and which charges are payable separately. Donsol Bay snorkeling and Manta Bowl scuba are different activities even when arranged from the same base.
Location and remaining gaps
Use the map as a general site reference, not as a navigation instruction or an exact entry point. This partial guide does not establish surveyed whole-site depth limits, an average depth, a universal certification minimum or current access rules. The LAMAVE document is explicitly dated 2020; its statements about conservation status, volunteering and local logistics have not been treated as current operational information. Recent, clearly sourced diver reports can help improve these gaps without replacing the operator's briefing on the day.
