Odie's Wall

About This Dive Site
Puerto Galera's best deep-recreational wall sits out west on the Manila Channel approach, away from the Escarceo circuit entirely. A blue-water descent lands divers at about 25 metres in open water facing a rocky face roughly eight metres high, which slopes away to 33 metres; beyond it the reef runs on to around 42 for divers watching their gas. The face is upholstered in oversized gorgonian fans in deep purple and burnt orange, with black coral trees and barrel sponges absent from the shallower reefs. Turquoise clouds of redtooth triggerfish work the cracks and holes. Run it as a drift, on nitrox, with a deep specialty, and treat the current as something that can set downward off the point as readily as across it.

Hazards & Safety
Be aware of these potential hazards at this dive site
Depth
HighThe 42 m base sits at the very edge of the recreational limit
Strong current
HighA drift on a tidal drop-off with occasional strong currents. The flow here can set downward off the point as well as across it, which on a wall that continues past 40 m makes depth the thing to watch — keep your eyes on the depth gauge throughout the drift.
Decompression obligation
MediumAt 40 m a diver has only a few minutes before a decompression obligation begins, and the deep extension beyond the wall puts an unplanned obligation within easy reach
Certification Required
A minimum of Advanced Open Water with Deep Diver specialty; nitrox recommended certification is required to dive this site.
