Dive Experience

Divers will find a shallow coral garden that gradually slopes to a maximum depth of around 35 m, though the main labyrinthine features are often explored at shallower depths. The water temperature typically ranges from a comfortable 26°C to 29°C throughout the year, making for pleasant dives. Currents at Paglugaban can be variable, ranging from mild to moderate, with potential for surge near cavern entrances, so careful planning and awareness are essential.

As you navigate through the stunning rock formations, which are often adorned with soft corals, you can expect to encounter a vibrant array of marine life. Keep an eye out for the majestic Spotted Eagle Ray (Aetobatus narinari) and the graceful Reef Manta Ray (Mobula alfredi) gliding by. Paglugaban is also one of the few sites in the Philippines with increasing reports of Dugong (Dugong dugon) sightings. Schooling Fusiliers (Caesio spp.) are a common sight, often forming impressive clouds of fish. Beyond the pelagics, divers will find an abundance of macro life, including a diverse range of nudibranchs, octopus, and various species of sea turtles like Green Sea Turtles and Hawksbill Sea Turtles.

Certification and Hazards

Paglugaban is classified as an advanced dive site due to its overhead environment and variable currents. We recommend divers hold an Advanced Open Water certification to explore this site safely, which typically qualifies you to dive to 30 m. However, for those interested in exploring the deeper cave systems, which feature submerged passages and air chambers, a specialized cave diving certification is highly recommended. It is crucial to verify specific certification requirements and conditions with your chosen dive operator in El Nido, as the cave route presents unique challenges, including potential surge at the entrance. Historically, the cave system has been associated with incidents involving untrained divers, underscoring the need for proper training and disciplined gas planning for any penetration.
