The verified temperature range for the Samal Island zone is 26-30°C. The claimed minimum temperature for Pinnacle Point is 26°C, which is at the lower boundary of the range, but some sources suggest that average water temperatures in the wider Philippine Sea area and Davao region often remain above 26°C, implying the minimum could be higher for the specific region.

About This Dive Site
Pinnacle Point, Samal
Pinnacle Point is a named Samal dive location in Davao Gulf. PADI's entry, credited to South Shore Divers, describes submerged pinnacles and walls with corals and sponges, and warns of strong currents. Asia Dive Site also places a pinnacle near Ligid Caves northeast of Samal and describes potentially fierce currents.
Confirm access and depth
The PADI entry gives 35 metres in its description and 18 metres in its maximum-depth field. That unresolved disagreement remains visible in this guide; neither value is a verified dive limit. Its narrative describes boat access while the entry field says shore. Confirm both the transfer and the actual water-entry arrangements with the operator.
Ask which pinnacle and route the trip covers and how the intended profile fits your experience. This partial guide does not establish a reliable current schedule, route map or complete depth range.
Reports of fish, octopuses and sea snakes are source observations, not promised sightings. General claims about Davao Gulf biodiversity or Philippine diving seasons do not establish conditions at Pinnacle Point on your travel dates.
What dated visitors recorded
Dive Happy's Davao feature, first printed in Scuba Diver AustralAsia in 2008 and republished online in July 2009, describes a pinnacle off the furthest point of Big Ligid, the island on Samal's north-eastern tip where it also found a cave in the wall. The article does not use the name Pinnacle Point, so this guide does not assert that it is the same formation; it is the only firsthand description of a pinnacle at Ligid found for this guide. The same writer called Big Ligid Davao's best chance of roving pelagics such as packs of barracuda and whitetip sharks riding the currents, and noted that those currents also improve the visibility there.
Asia Dive Site's Samal page, fetched in October 2026, says the pinnacle close to Ligid Caves offers exciting diving but warns that currents can be fierce, and lists octopus, morays, trevally, surgeonfish and jacks as what you can expect to come across. The SSI destination guide for Davao and Samal, read in October 2026, says Pinnacle Point offers experienced divers the chance to drift swiftly around an underwater seamount. Both sources frame the site as a current dive for experienced divers.
Conflicting difficulty ratings
Not every listing agrees. A DivePlanner Pro page read in October 2026 calls Pinnacle Point a beginner-friendly site with a pinnacle formation at eighteen metres and typically gentle conditions. That conflicts with PADI's 35-metre narrative, with Asia Dive Site's fierce currents and with SSI's experienced-divers framing; the disagreement is recorded here and not reconciled. The PADI entry's own fields list PADI Open Water Diver as useful training and sea snake as a common sighting, alongside the 18-metre maximum-depth field already noted above. Dive Happy's general report of turbid Davao Gulf water with an average visibility of around 10 metres and occasional strong current is a dated observation, not a forecast. Ask the operator which pinnacle they mean, how they handle the current and what depth they plan before booking.
