Rudy's Rock (Balicasag Island)

Prepare for an exhilarating dive at Rudy's Rock, a renowned dive site located on the southwest side of Balicasag Island, a jewel often accessed from Panglao, Bohol. This intermediate dive offers a captivating blend of wall, drift, coral garden, swim-through, and dramatic drop-off topography, promising an unforgettable underwater adventure for certified Open Water divers.

Dive Profile and Conditions

At Rudy's Rock, divers will find a vibrant reef shelf starting as shallow as 5 to 7 meters, before dramatically tumbling down a wall to a maximum depth of 40 meters. While the most captivating features are often found around 15 meters, the deeper sections offer thrilling exploration for those with advanced buoyancy control. The water temperature typically ranges from a comfortable 26°C to 30°C, making for pleasant diving conditions year-round. We typically experience moderate currents here, which often make for an enjoyable drift dive experience, allowing us to effortlessly glide along the stunning reef scape. However, divers should be mindful that currents can occasionally intensify, particularly on the exposed southern corner.

Marine Life Encounters

Rudy's Rock is a bustling hub of marine biodiversity. As we explore, divers can frequently encounter the magnificent Bigeye Trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus), often schooling in mesmerizing "tornado" formations that can engulf us in a shimmering wall of silver. Keep an eye out for the powerful Great Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) patrolling the deeper blue.

This dive site is a sanctuary for sea turtles, and we are almost guaranteed sightings of both the graceful Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) as they forage in the shallow coral gardens. Peer into the many cracks and crevices of the wall to discover the impressive Giant Moray (Gymnothorax javanicus) and a delightful assortment of colorful Nudibranchs (Nudibranchia spp.) adorning the corals. Other common sightings include various reef fish, sweetlips, snappers, lionfish, and occasional groupers. Lucky divers might even spot a whitetip reef shark resting in a cave.

Site Features and Hazards

The topography of Rudy's Rock is exceptionally diverse, featuring dramatic walls, impressive drop-offs, and vibrant coral gardens teeming with both hard and soft corals. Divers will also have the opportunity to explore small swim-throughs and caverns carved into the reef, adding an exciting element of overhead environment exploration.

While Rudy's Rock is accessible to Open Water divers, its intermediate difficulty stems from the potential for moderate to strong currents and the presence of overhead environments. We recommend good buoyancy control and awareness, especially when navigating swim-throughs. As with any popular dive destination, boat traffic in the area requires vigilance during ascent and descent.
