About This Dive Site

Sampaguita dive site in Moalboal, Philippines, is a notable underwater destination renowned for its vibrant marine life and diverse topography. Located where the Tongo dive site concludes, Sampaguita is part of the Southern Marine Sanctuary, a protected area that contributes to the abundance of marine species found here. The dive typically begins and concludes along a deep wall that plunges to considerable depths, inviting divers to be mindful of their no-decompression limits. The reef top at Sampaguita is adorned with numerous hard corals and is a frequent spot for encountering turtles. Along the wall, divers can explore small caves and crevices, which serve as habitats for various nudibranchs and shells. Bringing a dive torch is recommended to fully appreciate the life hidden within these caves.

Visibility at Sampaguita generally ranges from 10 to 25 meters, with currents often mild, reported between 0-2 knots. Water temperatures are consistently warm, ranging from 28 to 29°C, making it a comfortable dive location year-round. The site is accessible by boat, typically a short 7-minute ride from Panagsama Beach. While diving, caution is advised during low tide, as some parts of the reef can be exposed, necessitating careful entry if performing a backward roll.

Sampaguita is suitable for Open Water Divers and offers a captivating underwater landscape with a mix of hard and soft corals, anemones, and sea fans. The site is a haven for diverse marine creatures. Lucky divers may spot juvenile barracudas, fusiliers, and schools of razorfish (Aeoliscus strigatus). Leaf fish (Taenianotus triacanthus) and the elusive harlequin ghost pipefish (Solenostomus paradoxus) are also present. In the shallow areas and amongst the corals, the famous mandarin fish (Synchiropus splendidus) can be observed. The reef top boasts impressive staghorn corals (Acropora sp.), which are vital for the reef's structure. Night dives at Sampaguita can reveal different marine life, including decorator crabs, cuttlefish, and various nudibranchs.
