About This Dive Site
Santa Sofia MPA is listed by Sogod Bay Scuba Resort as a dive site in Southern Leyte. The operator identifies this as a marine sanctuary near Tangkaan.
A 2008 reserve directory lists a Santa Sofia sanctuary point about 306 m from this operator map pin. The two points may describe different parts of the sanctuary; the entry location and boundary remain unconfirmed. Santa Sofia is not merged with Santa Paz. The source pin is an operator map location, not a surveyed navigation waypoint.
This partial guide preserves the operator’s published location while further checks are pending. Current entry arrangements, depth limits, currents, visibility and seasonal conditions remain unconfirmed here. Confirm the intended site and a suitable dive plan with a local operator.
Slope profile reported by several visitors
Independent accounts agree on a gentle hard-coral slope ending on sand. The Underwater Photography Guide's Sogod Bay article of April 2013 places Santa Sofia just south of Padre Burgos and describes a gentle slope full of hard coral down to a 25 metre sandy bottom. A blog that links to Sogod Bay Scuba Resort, in a post whose address carries a January 2009 date, says the site is reached by following the road south to Barangay Tangkaan, can be dived from shore or boat, has most of its hard coral at around 10–12 metres, and that a 45-degree slope drops to 25 metres with sandy patches; it also states the area had been a sanctuary since 2005. Dive Happy's Sogod Bay guide, updated after an April 2024 visit, calls it a lovely afternoon dive along a gentle slope south of the resort by the town. The resort's current map data, captured on 7 October 2026, lists 5–30 metres, all levels and a 15–20 minute boat ride, so the 30 metre figure is an operator range rather than the 25 metre sand line the dive accounts describe.
Turtles, macro and dusk
Turtles are the recurring theme. The 2013 article says hawksbill turtles patrol the slope and rest among the hard coral; Dive Happy saw several turtles, two of them large, and reports juvenile barracuda regularly seen, suggesting a nursery role; the 2009-dated post lists hawksbill turtles, nudibranchs, ghost pipefish, flamboyant cuttlefish, crocodilefish, giant trevally, humphead wrasse and occasional eagle rays; Padre Burgos Castle Resort's current page lists soft corals, shrimpfish, pipefish, frogfish, batfish, turtles, lionfish and signal gobies; and the resort map data names mandarinfish at dusk as a highlight. A GMA News "Biyahe ni Drew" feature from December 2015, set in Barangay Santa Sofia, mentions lionfish, sea snakes, turtles and occasional whale sharks. Each list is one visit or one operator's summary; none is a census, and the whale-shark mention is seasonal and incidental.
Grouped descriptions not adopted
Peter's Dive Resort describes Turtle Rock, Heaven's Gate and Santa Sofia together under its Tangkaan Point heading, with world-class hard corals, gentle currents and depths to 40 metres; Sogod Bay Scuba Resort's 2019 listing on Bluewater Dive Travel pairs "Tankan and Santa Sofia" with colourful soft corals, huge barrel corals, mandarinfish, turtles, eagle rays, batfish and frogfish. The 40 metre figure belongs to the grouped Peter's section and is not treated here as a Santa Sofia depth. The 2008 reserve-directory offset noted above remains unresolved; a shore entry from the Tangkaan road and a boat entry may reach different parts of the sanctuary.
