Sepok Wall (Anilao)

Nestled off the white-sand spit at Maricaban's northwestern tip, Sepok Wall is a captivating dive site that offers a delightful experience for divers of all levels, particularly beginners. This site is renowned for its vibrant wall, teeming with life and color, making it one of Anilao's gentlest yet most rewarding "big" dives.

Diving Conditions and Site Features

The dive site features a long, vertical face of solid rock that gracefully descends from approximately 5 m to a maximum depth of 28 m. Divers will find the wall's surface generously adorned, roughly 80% sheathed in a breathtaking array of soft corals, immense Gorgonian Sea Fans (Annella mollis), and impressive Barrel Sponges (Xestospongia testudinaria), alongside bright tunicates.

We typically encounter a mild, southwest-setting current that gently drifts us along the wall, providing an effortless drift diving experience. While the fact sheet indicates "current" as a potential hazard, the conditions here are generally manageable, making it an ideal location for Open Water certified divers.

Water temperatures in Anilao are comfortable year-round, generally ranging from 24°C to 30°C. Divers can expect cooler temperatures of around 24°C to 26°C during the months of January and February, warming up to 28°C to 30°C from April to June.

Marine Life Encounters

As we drift along the wall, divers will be mesmerized by the shimmering schools of Sea Goldies (Pseudanthias squamipinnis), damsels, and surgeonfish in the shallows. Keep an eye out in the blue for the occasional passage of larger pelagic species like Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis) and grouper.

Sepok Wall is a macro paradise, especially in the sandy shallows behind the point. Here, divers can meticulously search for the expertly camouflaged Painted Frogfish (Antennarius pictus) and the elusive Leaf Scorpionfish (Taenianotus triacanthus). The Twin-spot Lionfish (Dendrochirus biocellatus) also frequents these areas. We often find that the safety stop becomes as productive and exciting as the main wall dive itself, with an amazing variety of assorted Nudibranchs (Nudibranchia spp.) clinging to the corals and sponges.

Certification and Recommendations

Sepok Wall is accessible to Open Water certified divers, making it an excellent choice for those new to wall diving or seeking a relaxed yet vibrant underwater experience. While the current is generally mild, we always recommend maintaining good buoyancy control, especially when exploring the wall's intricate details. The combination of wall and reef diving, coupled with the gentle drift, ensures a memorable dive site for all.
