Southwest Wall

Southwest Wall is a renowned dive site situated along the southwestern edge of the South Atoll within the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, Philippines. This site is celebrated for its dramatic sheer vertical wall that plunges into the vast expanse of the Sulu Sea. Divers at Southwest Wall can expect a thrilling drift dive experience, navigating along coral-covered overhangs and massive gorgonian sea fans. The topography is a key attraction, featuring an extensive wall dropping to considerable depths. The healthy and densely populated reef showcases vibrant coral architecture, making it a prime location for wide-angle underwater photography, where sweeping reef vistas are a common sight.

The dive profile at Southwest Wall typically involves a drift along the vertical wall, requiring strict buoyancy control and regular depth monitoring. Currents here are generally moderate but can be variable, necessitating the use of a surface marker buoy (SMB) and reel for all divers. The site is known for regular encounters with cruising pelagic species, as divers often keep an eye out into the blue for passing marine life. Visibility is consistently excellent, often ranging from 20 to 40 meters, allowing for clear views of the abundant underwater ecosystem. Water temperatures are comfortably warm, typically between 27-30°C.

Marine life at Southwest Wall is diverse and plentiful, characteristic of the Tubbataha Reefs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Coral Triangle. Divers can anticipate sightings of grey reef sharks and dogtooth tuna patrolling the wall. The healthy reef supports a myriad of smaller reef fish, including various species of moray eels, angelfish, and grouper. Large gorgonian sea fans and sponges are prevalent, contributing to the rich habitat. Occasional sightings of larger pelagics like hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, and manta rays are also possible, especially during peak season. The park, in general, is a breeding ground for various marine animals, further enhancing the biodiversity observed at sites like Southwest Wall.

As with most dive sites in Tubbataha, Southwest Wall is exclusively accessed via liveaboard during the designated diving season from mid-March to mid-June. This limited access ensures the pristine condition of the reef. The remote offshore location means that medical evacuation would require extensive coordination, emphasizing the importance of careful dive planning and adherence to safety protocols. The diving here is considered suitable for intermediate to advanced divers who are comfortable with drift diving and managing variable currents.
