Tubbataha North Atoll: A World Heritage Dive into the Sulu Sea

Prepare for an unparalleled diving adventure at Tubbataha North Atoll, a jewel within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park. Located in the remote heart of the Sulu Sea, approximately 150 kilometers southeast of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines, this dive site is a testament to pristine marine biodiversity.

Diving Conditions and Requirements

Tubbataha North Atoll is renowned for its challenging yet incredibly rewarding diving. We classify this dive site as advanced due to the prevalence of strong and often unpredictable currents, which can shift direction mid-dive, creating dynamic conditions. For this reason, we strongly recommend that divers hold an Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent, ideally with a minimum of 25 logged dives.

Diving here is exclusively via liveaboard, typically departing from Puerto Princesa, and is only possible during the limited diving season from mid-March to mid-June when sea conditions are calmer. Divers will find excellent visibility, often ranging from 20 to 45 meters, providing crystal-clear views of the spectacular underwater scenery. The water temperature is consistently warm, typically ranging from 27°C to 30°C.

The North Atoll offers a variety of captivating dive environments, including dramatic walls, atolls, drift dives, and extensive reef systems. Two of its most famous sections include:

• The Washing Machine: Located at the exposed northeastern edge of the atoll, this dive site lives up to its name with fast-changing and swirling currents. It's an exhilarating drift dive over a plateau, where depths can reach approximately 25 meters. The strong currents here attract a wealth of pelagic species, making for thrilling encounters.
• Shark Airport: Adjacent to the Washing Machine, Shark Airport features a wide sandy plateau at around 15 meters, sloping down to a shelf at 25 meters. This area serves as a natural cleaning station, where divers can observe schools of Grey Reef Sharks and Whitetip Reef Sharks resting and cruising the sandy bottom. It's also a popular spot for night dives, offering a different perspective on its inhabitants.

Abundant Marine Life

Tubbataha North Atoll is a vibrant hub of marine activity, boasting an exceptional density of species. Divers can expect frequent encounters with the magnificent Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus) and Grey Reef Shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos). Keep an eye out for graceful Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) foraging on the reef. Lucky divers may also spot the majestic Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus) and elegant Reef Manta Ray (Mobula alfredi) gliding through the blue. Huge schools of Bigeye Trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus) and other schooling fish are a common and breathtaking sight, along with a diverse array of colorful reef fish, groupers, and Napoleon wrasse.
