Jemeluk Bay

Overview

Jemeluk Bay is a shore dive in Amed, on the north-east coast of Bali, which Amed Jepun Divers calls Amed's iconic dive site and describes as calm and beginner-friendly. SSI's dive site guide on scubago gives the position -8.3379, 115.661, which is the point used here; OpenStreetMap marks the hamlet of Jemeluk about 150 metres from that point.

How the site is dived

Amed Jepun Divers says the bay is easily accessible from shore and has a sloping reef with artificial structures, statues and coral gardens. On the left side it describes mermaid sculptures and small pyramids; to the right, the sandy slope deepens towards Jemeluk Wall, which is a separate site and not part of this record. SSI says artificial reefs were placed to restore reef damaged by past natural events, and that hard and soft corals are still rich close to the corner with Bunutan. Blue Season Bali mentions fish attracting devices called "Pyramids" close by that are popular with morays. Amed Jepun Divers gives a maximum depth of 18 metres and an average of 8 metres; this record uses 18 metres as a single-source maximum.

Marine life

Amed Jepun Divers names resident spadefish, schools of diamondfish, snappers, batfish, lionfish and anemonefish, cleaner shrimp and morays on the artificial structures, garden eels, scorpionfish and seahorses on the sand, reef octopuses and cuttlefish, and on a lucky day a reef shark or Spanish mackerel. Blue Season Bali calls Jemeluk an easy site for macro photography and names ghost pipefish, mimic octopus, lobsters, shrimp and goby pairs, anemones with clownfish, blue-spotted rays, surgeonfish and Bargibant's pygmy seahorses. SSI says snappers and hawksbill turtles are frequent in the bay.

Conditions and level

Amed Jepun Divers rates the site for all levels and says its calm conditions suit relaxed fun dives and beginner training; SSI calls it suitable for beginners and experienced divers, and Blue Season Bali calls it an easy dive. These are operator statements, not measurements. None of the sources gives a current strength, water temperature, visibility range or season that this record uses.
