Tugu

Overview

PADI's page for Tugu describes the site by its proximity to the ferry port of Sampalan on Nusa Penida and calls it particularly pleasant to dive. It describes great diversity on the wall, with a large quantity of fauna and flora, and lists drift as the dive type. The page also reports that a small mola was once seen jumping out of the sea at the site.

The dive

Bali FUN Diving, which calls the site Tugu Point, describes a descent along colourful coral reefs and large boulders. It says the steep slopes are a cleaning station for sunfish. It says the site is exposed to strong currents that can be difficult to predict, and that only experienced divers should attempt it. Bali FUN Diving lists Tugu Point under its dive sites for experienced or advanced divers only.

Level and conditions

nusapenida.org, a guide written with a Dune Penida dive instructor, rates Tugu intermediate to advanced with a moderate to strong current, and lists a fast drift and larger fish in the blue as its draws. Its comparison table lists the site as year-round, with a boat time of 20 minutes and a depth of 20 metres. The two operator accounts differ on level: nusapenida.org includes intermediate divers, while Bali FUN Diving says only experienced divers should attempt the dive. nusapenida.org notes that currents change everything around the island, and that a site rated for beginners on a calm day can become advanced on a strong tide.
