It belongs to the family Loliginidae, commonly referred to as pencil squids or inshore squids. While the fact sheet lists its conservation status as Least Concern, it is worth noting that some sources classify it as Data Deficient or Near Threatened, reflecting the complexity of managing a species that may comprise several cryptic lineages.

These squids inhabit warm coastal waters, typically found at depths of 0–100 m in temperatures ranging from 16–34°C. They prefer diverse habitats including coral reefs, seagrass beds, and sandy or rocky shorelines. While often observed hovering in groups over coral and crinoids, particularly in the late afternoon, they are generally more active and found in shallower areas at night, retreating to deeper waters or seeking cover during the day. Unlike some other squid species, adult Bigfin Reef Squids rarely cannibalize one another, allowing different sizes to coexist without threat. Males may guard a female, displaying agonistic behaviors like spreading their arms to appear larger and flashing warning colors to deter rivals. For instance, spawning events are observed in Japan from spring through summer, typically when water temperatures reach around 19°C, often between late May and early June, and extending into August or even October in some areas.
