The Fire Urchin, scientifically known as Asthenosoma varium, is a strikingly beautiful yet venomous echinoderm belonging to the family Echinothuriidae. Often referred to by various common names such as Pacific fire urchin, elusive sea urchin, or electric sea urchin, its vibrant coloration serves as a clear warning of its potent sting.

Found across the Indo-Pacific region, its range extends from the eastern Indian Ocean to Japan, the Philippines, and New Caledonia. While records from the Red Sea are often attributed to the closely related species, Asthenosoma marisrubri, the Fire Urchin inhabits diverse coral environments, as well as sand and rubble sea bottoms.
