Commonly found in coastal areas, fusiliers inhabit coral reefs, rocky bottoms, seamounts, deep lagoons, and seaward reefs. They typically occur at depths of 1–60 m, with adults often preferring 12–20 m over steep reef drop-offs. These fish thrive in tropical to subtropical marine waters, generally found in temperatures ranging from 21–31°C. The conservation status for Caesio spp. is currently listed as Least Concern.
Identification
Fusiliers are easily recognized by their distinctive body shape and schooling habits:
- Size: They can reach a maximum size of 35 cm (14 in).
- Body Shape: Their bodies are streamlined, fusiform, and moderately compressed laterally, built for fast swimming.
- Mouth: They possess a small, highly protrusible mouth, positioned terminally, an adaptation for picking zooplankton from the water column.
- Fins:
- The dorsal fin is continuous, featuring 10 slender spines and 13–16 soft rays, and is typically scaled.
- The anal fin has 3 spines and 10–13 soft rays, also usually scaled.
- The caudal fin (tail fin) is deeply forked with pointed lobes.
- Pectoral fins typically have 17–23 rays, and a black spot at the base of the pectoral fin is a common feature in several species.
- Coloration: While coloration varies significantly among species within the genus, a common pattern includes a bluish upper body grading to white or pinkish on the underside. Many species display vibrant yellow stripes or patches along the body, or have a distinctly yellow caudal fin and posterior body. Black markings on the caudal fin lobes, such as black tips or median streaks, are also frequently observed.

Their preferred habitats include:
- Coral Reefs: Fusiliers are strongly linked to coral reef environments, including offshore reef slopes, outer reef channels, and deep lagoon pinnacles. They are often observed in large aggregations over fringing reefs and outer barrier reefs.
- Open Water Above Reefs: While associated with reefs, fusiliers are pelagic dwellers, spending their days in the water column above these structures, where they actively feed.
- Rocky and Sandy Habitats: Some species, such as the Redbelly Yellowtail Fusilier (Caesio cuning), can also be found in rocky and sandy mangrove habitats, and are known to tolerate more turbid waters with lower visibility.
Fusiliers typically occupy a wide depth range, from near the surface down to approximately 60 meters. While many species are commonly encountered by recreational divers at depths of 1 to 50 meters, some, like the Blue and Gold Fusilier (Caesio caerulaurea), can be found as deep as 80 meters.

At night, these large schools disperse, and individual fusiliers seek shelter within the intricate structures of the reef.
