A full scuba equipment kit can range from USD $500 to over USD $5,000 depending on the level of equipment and whether you are buying new or used. The good news: you do not need to buy everything at once, and renting is a sensible strategy while you establish your preferences.
Open Water Diver — Getting Started
At the Open Water level, you are still developing your preferences and diving regularly enough to justify major purchases. Buy first: mask and fins (fit is personal; rental quality is often poor). Rent: everything else.
| Item | Buy or Rent? | Budget (New) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mask | Buy | USD $50–$120 | Fit is critical; do not rent |
| Fins | Buy | USD $60–$150 | Booties too if open-heel style |
| Wetsuit | Consider | USD $150–$350 | Buy if diving same climate repeatedly |
| BCD | Rent initially | USD $300–$700 | Preferences form after 20–30 dives |
| Regulator | Rent initially | USD $300–$600 | Buy once you dive 10+ times/year |
| Dive Computer | Buy | USD $200–$350 | Your dive history is personal; own it |
Advanced Open Water Diver — Growing Your Kit
At this stage you are diving more frequently and in more varied conditions. Buy the items you rent most often. Add a regulator and BCD that match your preferred diving style.
- Personal regulator (balanced piston or diaphragm): USD $300–$600
- BCD suited to your diving style: USD $350–$800
- Specialty gear: SMB spool (USD $30–$80), dive knife (USD $30–$100), dive torch (USD $80–$200)
Estimated total kit value: USD $1,000–$2,500 (not including wetsuit or drysuit).
Divemaster — Professional-Grade Kit
A Divemaster's equipment sees heavy, daily use across varied conditions. Reliability and serviceability matter more than price. Invest in a premium regulator from a brand with strong servicing network and clear parts availability.
- Premium balanced regulator with cold-water rating: USD $500–$900
- BP/W or high-quality jacket BCD: USD $400–$900
- Advanced dive computer (multi-gas or air-integrated): USD $400–$800
- Drysuit (if operating in cold water): USD $1,000–$3,500
Estimated professional kit value: USD $2,500–$6,000+ (not including drysuit or additional specialty items).
Buying Second-Hand
Second-hand masks, fins, BCDs, and wetsuits are generally safe to buy if they are in good condition. Never buy a second-hand regulator unless it comes with a service record, and have it serviced immediately by a qualified technician before diving it. A failed regulator cannot be debugged underwater.
