The pre-dive safety check is the single most important habit a diver can develop. It takes less than two minutes and has prevented countless accidents. The standard five-point check is remembered with the acronym BWRAF — often recalled as "Begin With Review And Friend."
Never skip the buddy check. Over 80% of diving accidents involve equipment that was not properly configured before the dive. The BWRAF check catches problems before they become emergencies.
BWRAF — The Five-Point Check
- B — BCD: Both divers inflate and deflate their BCDs. Check the low-pressure inflator hose is connected. Confirm dump valves operate freely.
- W — Weights: Check weight belt or integrated weights. Confirm the quick-release mechanism is accessible and functioning. Ask your buddy to demonstrate the release.
- R — Releases: Check all tank bands, shoulder straps, and crotch straps. Confirm the tank is firmly secured and the valve is fully open.
- A — Air: Both divers breathe from their primary regulator. Check the octopus/alternate air source. Confirm starting pressure (typically 200–230 bar). Agree on turn-around pressure (e.g., 100 bar).
- F — Final Check: Mask, fins, computer, dive knife, SMB. Confirm the dive plan (max depth, max time, signals, emergency procedures).

Perform the buddy check in the same order every time, even on familiar dives. Familiarity breeds shortcuts — and shortcuts cause accidents.
