Angel City: Bonaire's Iconic Double Reef Adventure

Welcome to Angel City, one of Bonaire's most celebrated dive sites, renowned for its distinctive double-reef system and abundant marine life. This beginner-friendly shore dive offers an unforgettable underwater journey, making it a favorite for both new and experienced divers exploring the island's southern coast.

Dive Site Topography and Conditions

Angel City boasts a unique geological feature: a true double-reef system, characterized by two parallel coral ridges separated by a wide, sandy channel. Divers will find the first reef ridge beginning in shallow waters, around 4.5 meters, and gently sloping down to approximately 15 meters. This vibrant inner reef is teeming with life and offers a fantastic starting point for your dive.

Coral bridges elegantly span the sand channel, providing natural pathways to the second, deeper reef. This outer ridge typically begins within 18 meters and extends to a maximum depth of around 30 meters, though some areas may reach 40 meters, with much of the action concentrated between 8 and 20 meters. The sand corridor itself is often described as a "marine-life highway," where divers can observe fascinating creatures traversing between the two reef systems.

Conditions at Angel City are generally mild, with calm to light chop along the sheltered leeward coast and mild currents. The water temperature is consistently warm, typically ranging from 26°C to 29°C year-round, making for comfortable diving. Visibility is often excellent, frequently exceeding 15-30 meters.

Marine Life Encounters

Angel City is a vibrant ecosystem, home to a diverse array of Caribbean marine species. As you explore the reefs and sand channel, you can encounter:

• Spotted Eagle Rays (Aetobatus narinari): Often seen gracefully gliding through the sand channel.
• French Angelfish (Pomacanthus paru): Famously friendly and a common sight, these beautiful fish are said to have inspired the dive site's name.
• Southern Stingrays (Hypanus americanus): Frequently found resting on or cruising across the sandy flats.
• Green Moray Eels (Gymnothorax funebris): Peeking from their coral hideaways.
• Stoplight Parrotfish (Sparisoma viride): Adding splashes of color as they graze the reef.
• Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas): Often spotted peacefully foraging.
• Atlantic Trumpetfish (Aulostomus maculatus): Masters of camouflage, blending seamlessly with the reef.
• Brown Garden Eels (Heteroconger longissimus): Swaying in mesmerizing colonies across the sand channel.
• Grey Snapper (Lutjanus griseus): Often found in schools around the reef structures.

Certification and Diving Experience

Angel City is an excellent dive site for beginner Open Water Divers, offering forgiving depths and an easy shore entry. However, due to the unique geometry of the double reef and the sand channel, we recommend that divers either go with a local instructor or be confident in their basic navigation skills, especially when exploring the second reef.

Important Considerations

While Angel City is generally an easy dive, divers should be aware of a few potential hazards. There can be boat traffic in the area, so always be vigilant during ascent and descent. Although currents are typically mild, it's wise to monitor air consumption closely, particularly on the outer reef, as returning against an unexpected current can consume additional gas. For the shore entry, we advise wearing sturdy booties to navigate the crushed coral rubble and rocky shoreline.
