About This Dive Site

Broken Rock (South Ari)

Welcome to Broken Rock, an iconic dive site nestled within the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its dramatic underwater topography and vibrant marine life. This advanced dive site is a must-visit for certified divers seeking an exhilarating experience in the Maldives.

Dive Site Features and Conditions

Broken Rock is a unique thila, approximately 80 meters long and oval-shaped, famously split in two by a deep canyon. Divers will find this spectacular gully, roughly 50 meters long and 1 to 3 meters wide, plunging up to 10 meters deep. Its walls are a breathtaking display of nature's artistry, adorned with huge gorgonian sea fans, sponges, and a kaleidoscope of pastel soft corals. Navigating this natural swim-through is a highlight, offering an immersive experience as you glide through the crevice.

Given its location within a channel, Broken Rock is known for strong currents, often making for exhilarating drift dives. We recommend this dive site for advanced divers holding an Advanced Open Water certification due to these conditions and the potential for overhead environments within the canyon. The top reef typically begins around 12 m, with dives usually descending to a maximum depth of 30 m, though deeper sections can extend beyond this. Water temperature generally ranges from a comfortable 26°C to 30°C throughout the year. Divers should be mindful of boat traffic and the inherent hazards of depth and strong currents at this dynamic location.

Marine Life Encounters

The rich ecosystem of Broken Rock promises a diverse array of marine encounters. As you explore the thila, you can expect to see Humphead Wrasse (Napoleon) gracefully patrolling the reef. Schools of Oriental Sweetlips and Bluestripe Snapper add vibrant color to the reef, while Great Barracuda often cruise the flanks. Keep an eye out for the majestic Whitetip Reef Shark and Grey Reef Shark, which are frequent visitors to the deeper waters.

Within the numerous cavities and crevices of the thila, divers will find Giant Morays peering out, and the reef top is often swarming with dazzling Sea Goldies (anthias). Longfin Batfish are also commonly sighted. Lucky divers may even encounter the elegant Hawksbill Turtle gliding by. The outer reef walls, dropping to 30 meters, are covered in healthy hard and soft coral communities that attract schooling fusiliers and bannerfish, adding to the site's incredible biodiversity.

Broken Rock offers a truly unforgettable underwater passage, combining geological drama with an abundance of marine life, making it a premier dive site in the South Ari Atoll for experienced divers.
