Prepare for one of Cozumel's most iconic and challenging dive sites: Devil's Throat (La Garganta del Diablo), located within the vibrant Punta Sur reef system at the island's southern tip. This technical dive is a true test of buoyancy control and advanced skills, offering an unforgettable journey through a unique underwater landscape.

The Dive Experience

Divers will begin their descent into the deep blue, often encountering moderate to strong and unpredictable currents that characterize this drift dive. Entry to the "Throat" itself typically starts around 24 to 27 meters (80 to 90 feet) through a narrow, near-vertical chimney or tunnel. This thrilling swim-through descends at approximately a 45-degree angle, lined with stunning red coral and sponges, becoming progressively darker as you go. A dive light is mandatory to fully appreciate the vibrant colors within.

The tunnel then opens dramatically onto a breathtaking sheer wall at depths ranging from 38 to 41 meters (125 to 135 feet), dropping further into the abyss. This sudden transition from confined space to open blue is often cited as the most memorable moment of the dive. From here, divers can explore the impressive deep wall, which reaches depths of up to 50 meters (165 feet). The dive continues through a labyrinth of coral formations, often leading into a series of chambers known as "The Cathedral" or "Little Cathedral," where shafts of light penetrate, creating a truly ethereal atmosphere. We recommend maintaining excellent buoyancy control throughout the dive to avoid silting, particularly within the narrower passages.

Marine Life and Conditions

While the topography is the main draw, divers can also encounter a rich array of marine life. Keep an eye out for the endemic Splendid Toadfish (Sanopus splendidus), often found hiding in crevices. We frequently spot Caribbean Reef Sharks (Carcharhinus perezi) patrolling the deeper waters, and Spotted Eagle Rays (Aetobatus narinari) are often seen gliding gracefully along the deep wall, sometimes in squadrons. Other common sightings include nurse sharks, Southern stingrays, various species of turtles, groupers, barracudas, and a vibrant collection of reef fish.

Cozumel's waters are known for their exceptional clarity, with visibility often exceeding 30 meters (100 feet). Water temperatures remain comfortably warm year-round, typically ranging from 25°C (77°F) in the winter months to 30°C (86°F) in the summer, generally staying between 25-29°C (77-84°F).

Certification and Hazards

Due to the significant depth, overhead environment, and potential for decompression obligation, Devil's Throat is classified as a technical dive. An Advanced Open Water certification is required, and many dive operators insist on a prior dive with their instructors to assess a diver's skills and comfort level before attempting this site. Hazards include the depth itself, the overhead environment of the swim-throughs, the risk of silting, and the potential for nitrogen narcosis. Divers must be proficient in buoyancy control and gas management.
