About This Dive Site

Dungon Wall: A Multi-Level Marvel in Puerto Galera

Prepare for an engaging multi-level dive experience at Dungon Wall, a renowned dive site just off Dungon Beach in Puerto Galera. This intermediate dive site offers a captivating blend of wall, reef, wreck, and drop-off features, making it a favorite for photographers and marine life enthusiasts alike.

Dive Profile and Conditions

At Dungon Wall, divers will find a gentle coral slope that gradually descends before transitioning into a steep, vibrant wall. The wall typically begins around 12 m and plunges down to approximately 25 m, offering a dramatic underwater landscape to explore. The maximum depth at this dive site can reach up to 30 m, with an average depth of around 20 m.

We can expect water temperatures ranging from a comfortable 26°C to 30°C year-round, making for pleasant diving conditions. Currents here are generally moderate, providing a dynamic drift dive experience that can carry you along the reef, though conditions can vary. While the currents are often manageable, divers should be aware of the potential for stronger flows, which can enhance the drift experience. The primary hazard at this dive site is depth, particularly for those exploring the deeper sections or the wreck.

What You'll Encounter

Dungon Wall is celebrated for its incredible biodiversity and unique macro subjects. A highlight for many divers is the resident Disco Clam (Electric Flame Oyster, Ctenoides ales), typically found at around 24 m, whose flashing bioluminescent lip creates a mesmerizing display and is a prized macro subject.

Keep a keen eye out for the elusive Pygmy Seahorse (Hippocampus bargibanti), often clinging camouflaged to sea fans along the wall. Divers frequently spot the distinctive Banded Sea Krait (Laticauda colubrina) gracefully navigating the reef, and majestic Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) grazing among the corals. The dive site is also home to various species of Giant Frogfish (Antennarius commerson), masters of camouflage that blend seamlessly with their surroundings.

As you descend deeper, you will find the wreckage of an old sailing catamaran resting at approximately 28 m. This wreck has become a localized fish aggregator, attracting schools of reef fish and providing additional habitat for marine life, making it an excellent spot for exploration and photography.

Certification and Recommendations

Due to its multi-level profile and moderate currents, Dungon Wall is best suited for intermediate divers. An Open Water certification is generally acceptable for shallower sections, but we recommend an Advanced Open Water certification to fully explore the deeper parts of the wall and the wreck safely. This dive site is an excellent opportunity for divers looking to build confidence in wall diving and expand their experience with diverse marine environments.
