Drop-off · Wall · Pinnacle · Drift

For technical divers seeking an exhilarating challenge and unparalleled pelagic encounters, the Fish Bowl dive site in Puerto Galera stands as a testament to the raw power and beauty of the ocean. This is not a dive for the faint of heart, but for those with the appropriate training and experience, it promises an unforgettable adventure into the deep blue.
The Fish Bowl is an extreme deep-water depression, characterized by a dramatic drop-off, intricate walls, and a prominent pinnacle formation. Divers will find themselves immersed in a dynamic drift dive, often interconnected with the nearby Horsehead Reef. This unique topography creates a natural pelagic funnel, where high-velocity currents draw large predators up from the depths, offering spectacular viewing opportunities. The rocky reef top is adorned with vibrant whip corals and soft tree corals, eventually giving way to a deep sandy bottom.
As its name suggests, the Fish Bowl is renowned for its strong, often severe, tidal currents that can feel like a "Washing Machine". These powerful currents are a defining feature of the dive, demanding excellent buoyancy control and advanced drift diving experience. Depths at this dive site extend well beyond recreational limits, typically dropping from around 30 meters past 60 meters. Divers should be prepared for potential decompression obligations due to the significant depths involved. The water temperature in Puerto Galera generally ranges from 25°C to 30°C throughout the year, with cooler temperatures in January-February and warmer conditions in May-June. Visibility at drift sites like Fish Bowl averages 15-25 meters, occasionally reaching 30-40 meters under optimal conditions.
The strong currents that sweep through the Fish Bowl act as a conveyor belt of nutrients, attracting an impressive array of pelagic marine life. Divers can expect thrilling encounters with apex predators such as the majestic Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus) and the formidable Great Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda). Keep your eyes peeled for schools of swift Rainbow Runner (Elagatis bipinnulata) and powerful Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) patrolling the depths. The graceful Spotted Eagle Ray (Aetobatus narinari) is also a common sight, gliding through the blue. Occasional sightings of Grey Reef Sharks have also been reported. This area, part of the Verde Island Passage, is celebrated as the "center of the center of marine biodiversity," making every dive a potential spectacle of marine abundance.
Given the technical nature of this dive site, we strongly recommend that divers hold a Deep Diver Specialty certification or equivalent TecRec training. Advanced certification and prior drift diving experience are essential prerequisites for safely navigating the powerful currents. We advise precise timing, often aligning with neap tides, and a conservative gas plan to ensure a safe and enjoyable dive. Always consult with local dive instructors who are intimately familiar with the site's conditions and can provide the most current guidance on tides and currents.
The Fish Bowl offers an unparalleled experience for certified technical divers seeking an adrenaline-fueled dive filled with large pelagic encounters and dramatic underwater landscapes.
