Gorgonian Wall (Cabilao Island)
Prepare for an unforgettable underwater experience at Gorgonian Wall, widely regarded as Cabilao Island's signature dive site. This impressive near-vertical wall runs roughly 100 meters parallel to the island's west shore, offering a breathtaking descent into a vibrant marine ecosystem.
Dive Site Features
- Depth: The wall begins at a shallow 5 meters, cresting near the reef top, and plunges dramatically to a maximum depth of 60 meters. This significant drop-off ensures an exciting dive well past recreational limits.
- Site Type: As its name suggests, this is primarily a spectacular wall and drop-off dive, adorned with a thriving reef ecosystem.
- Wall Structure: Divers will find the face of the wall to be a magnificent tapestry of hard and soft corals, riddled with numerous overhangs and small caves that invite exploration.
- Entry Point: The entry to this remarkable dive site is typically about 100 meters off the beach.
Marine Life
Gorgonian Wall is a macro photographer's dream and a haven for diverse marine life:
- Gorgonian Sea Fans: The wall is famously covered with some of the largest and most impressive gorgonian sea fans in the region, creating a stunning visual spectacle.
- Pygmy Seahorse (Hippocampus bargibanti): Keen-eyed divers will delight in searching for the elusive pygmy seahorse, often perfectly camouflaged within the branches of the gorgonian sea fans.
- Nudibranch (assorted): The wall's intricate folds and coral formations are home to an array of colorful and sometimes rare nudibranch species.
- Giant Frogfish (Antennarius commerson): Divers frequently encounter well-disguised giant frogfish patiently waiting for prey.
- Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas): We often spot graceful green sea turtles gliding effortlessly through the blue.
- Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus): Keep an eye out for whitetip reef sharks, which are occasionally seen resting in the small caves or patrolling the deeper sections of the wall.
- Barrel Sponge (Xestospongia testudinaria): Large barrel sponges add to the rich biodiversity of the wall.
- Other Encounters: Expect to see schools of barracudas and jackfish, various scorpionfish, and clouds of vibrant anthias, adding to the dynamic underwater scenery.
Diving Conditions & Recommendations
- Difficulty: This is an advanced dive site, suitable for experienced divers.
- Certification Required: An Advanced Open Water certification is required to safely explore the depths of Gorgonian Wall.
- Current: Currents at Gorgonian Wall can be variable, sometimes strong, making it an excellent location for exhilarating drift dives.
- Water Temperature: Divers can expect comfortable water temperatures, typically ranging from 26°C to 29°C.
- Hazards: Due to the significant depth and potential for variable currents, divers should be mindful of depth limits, current conditions, and decompression obligations. We always recommend diving with a local instructor or guide familiar with the site.
- Best Time to Dive: The dive site is particularly rewarding in the afternoon when the sunlight rakes across the wall, highlighting the vibrant colors of the corals and marine life, making it ideal for both wide-angle and macro photography. Cabilao generally offers excellent visibility, often ranging from 20 to 40 meters. The best diving season is typically from January to May, or more broadly, November to June.
What current sources say about the wall
Bohol Divers Club, Dive The World, Nomadic Diver and Sea Explorers all describe Gorgonia Wall as starting at about 5 metres and dropping to about 60 metres; some of these accounts share wording, so they are not fully independent. Bohol Divers Club places the entry point about 100 metres from the beach. Nomadic Diver and Eco Divers Panglao describe the wall running roughly 100 metres from and parallel to the shore, while DumagueteInfo describes about a thousand metres of Gorgonia Wall along the house reef. The listing's stored maximum of 40 metres is not supported by these sources.
The accounts agree on big gorgonian fans, barrel sponges and other sponges, soft and hard corals, overhangs and small caves. Bohol Divers Club lists frogfish, nudibranchs, scorpionfish and pygmy seahorses; Sea Explorers lists frogfish, nudibranchs and pygmy seahorses and notes how the afternoon light illuminates the wall. DumagueteInfo says some house-reef dives must be planned carefully because of Cabilao's unstable water current.
What remains unverified
No reviewed source confirms the earlier text's giant frogfish species, green turtles, whitetip reef sharks, schooling barracuda and jacks or anthias at this wall. Its visibility, water-temperature and season ranges and the Advanced Open Water requirement are also unverified. Confirm conditions with a local operator before diving.

Hazards & Safety
Be aware of these potential hazards at this dive site
Depth
Severity: HighNear-vertical wall drops well past 40 m; gorgonian density rewards slow work at 15-30 m — strict turnaround discipline to avoid deco
Current
Severity: MediumVariable west-coast current; best dived on incoming or slack — can surge with tide change; know your exit before descending
Decompression obligation
Severity: MediumDeep wall profile combined with slow photography pace creates deco risk; carry a computer and respect NDLs on every dive
