DDC (Dauin Diving Center), published July 27 2025, states that Katipanan has 'no current, so it's best for beginners divers.' OpenWaterAtlas, published September 06 2026, also does not mention strong currents, implying calmer conditions. This directly contradicts the original claim that currents can be variable, requiring some experience.

About This Dive Site

Katipanan on Apo Island: partial guide

Katipanan is an Apo Island reef dive described on Bongo Bongo Divers' named-site page. The operator presents it as a gently sloping coral reef and highlights turtles and reef fish. This account concerns Apo Island in Negros Oriental, not Apo Reef in Mindoro.

Terrain and the operator's account

Bongo Bongo describes a slope from 5 metres to about 24 metres and lists 24 metres as its maximum. These are the operator's published figures, not an independent survey of the site's full extent. The operator considers Katipanan suitable for newer divers; that assessment does not establish a universal certification requirement or guarantee the same conditions on every visit.

Planning a visit

The operator advertises Apo Island day trips from Dauin and says the sites visited depend on conditions. Confirm that Katipanan is included in the planned route, the depth appropriate for your experience and the current departure arrangements. Turtle and fish reports describe possible wildlife, not guaranteed encounters. This partial guide is based on one named operator source; precise entry coordinates, today's conditions and independently measured encounter frequency have not been established by this review.

Other operators describe the same gentle reef

Mahi Mahi Dive Resort's undated Apo page, captured on 7 October 2026, calls Katipanan a nice easy dive site for all divers, says it is named after the small cowry shell often seen among the healthy soft corals, and reports little to no current, turtles and sea snakes gently cruising through the corals and over the sandy reef, and the option to dive it in two directions. Sea Explorers' Dauin dive-sites page, last modified on 2 September 2026, says the dive can be done in both directions depending on the mild current, places the best soft-coral gardens of the island in the shallows between 5 and 10 metres, calls it the best snorkelling site of the island and describes hard corals between 10 and 18 metres. Sea Explorers' separate July 2026 day-trip page adds a broad coral slope with large hard-coral formations, sea turtles frequently seen resting or feeding, and butterflyfish, angelfish, damselfish, wrasses, nudibranchs and sea snakes.

Depth and current figures differ between sources

Dive The World's undated page describes Katipanan as a shallow slope maxing out at 18 metres that suits macro lovers and check-out dives, and says the best of the reef is no deeper than 18 metres, whereas Bongo Bongo's page gives a slope to about 24 metres. Dauin Diving Center's page of 28 July 2025 says Katipanan has small caves and coral-covered rocks with seahorses and moray eels, no current and a visibility of 20 to 25 metres, yet its table rates the site intermediate; that page is an operator summary and its cave description is not repeated by any other reviewed source. None of these depth, visibility or current statements has been reconciled here, and all remain operator figures rather than survey data.
