Established in 1982 in partnership with Dr. Angel Alcala and Silliman University Marine Lab, this pioneering reserve showcases the incredible success of conservation efforts. Diving Conditions and Site Characteristics

Apo Island offers an intermediate diving experience, suitable for divers holding an Open Water certification or higher. We can explore a diverse range of site types, including pristine reefs, dramatic walls, and exhilarating drift dives. Depths at Apo Island Marine Sanctuary generally range from 5 meters to a maximum of around 40 meters, with many popular sites offering excellent diving within recreational limits. The water temperature is consistently warm, typically ranging from 27°C to 30°C year-round, making for comfortable dives. Visibility is reliably good, often between 15 and 35 meters, and on exceptional days can extend to 40 meters.

Currents at Apo Island are variable, ranging from mild to strong. Sites like Coconut Point are famously known as "The Washing Machine" due to their powerful currents, offering thrilling drift dives that are best suited for more experienced divers. These currents, while a hazard, also contribute to the incredible abundance of marine life. We advise divers to be mindful of strong currents and boat traffic, which are the primary hazards at this dive site. Some unique sites even feature streams of bubbles rising from the sandy seabed, a fascinating display of the island's volcanic activity.

Abundant Marine Life Encounters

Apo Island Marine Sanctuary is a true hotspot for biodiversity, boasting over 650 fish species and more than 400 coral species, making it one of the world's densest aggregations. The hard coral coverage is extraordinary, creating breathtaking underwater landscapes.

The undisputed stars of Apo Island are its resident sea turtles. Divers are almost guaranteed to encounter numerous Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) gracefully swimming, feeding, or resting on the reef. With over 60 photo-identified individuals, it's a truly special place for turtle enthusiasts.

Beyond the turtles, the dive site teems with a vibrant array of marine creatures:

• Schools of Fish: Expect to see impressive schools of Bigeye Trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus), jacks, barracuda, fusiliers, and anthias.
• Reef Sharks: Whitetip Reef Sharks (Triaenodon obesus) are regular sightings, and lucky divers might even spot thresher or hammerhead sharks in the deeper blue.
• Reef Dwellers: Keep an eye out for colorful reef fish like damselfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, and parrotfish, as well as moray eels and the occasional eagle ray.
• Macro Life: For those with a keen eye, the sanctuary offers excellent macro opportunities, including leaf scorpionfish, pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, frogfish, and various crustaceans.
• Other Fascinating Creatures: Sea snakes (sea kraits) are also common, hunting among the corals.
