Dive Site Features and Conditions

Kuredu Express is a dynamic dive site characterized by a sandy channel that gracefully steps down in a series of terraces towards a prominent reef corner. Divers will find dramatic drop-offs and walls, along with a coral-lined canyon typically around 20 m in depth, which provides excellent viewing ledges.

The "express" in its name refers to the powerful currents that sweep through the channel. These currents, which can be swift and quickly changing, combine the out-reef and channel flows, creating a high-speed drift that allows divers to fly along the reef with minimal effort.

Depths at Kuredu Express typically range between 20 m and 35 m, with terraces starting around 20 m and the site reaching into the mid-30s. The water temperature in the Lhaviyani Atoll generally remains a comfortable 26°C to 30°C year-round.

Marine Life Encounters

The strong currents at Kuredu Express act as a magnet for an incredible array of marine life, making it a prime location for pelagic encounters. Divers will frequently find themselves amidst large schools of Grey Reef Sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), often numbering 20-30 individuals, patrolling the channel and congregating at the reef corner. The shark action here can be truly mind-blowing under the right conditions.

Beyond the impressive shark populations, you can encounter a diverse cast of ocean giants and vibrant reef inhabitants:

• Sharks: In addition to Grey Reef Sharks, divers may occasionally spot Silvertip Sharks (Carcharhinus albimarginatus) and Whitetip Reef Sharks (Triaenodon obesus).
• Rays: Keep an eye out for elegant Spotted Eagle Rays (Aetobatus narinari) gliding gracefully through the blue. Reef Manta Rays (Mobula alfredi) are also a highlight and are occasionally sighted, particularly during the southwest monsoon season (May to November).
• Pelagics: Schools of Dogtooth Tuna (Gymnosarda unicolor), Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis), and Great Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) are common sights, often hunting in the currents.
• Reef Dwellers: Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) are frequently seen resting on ledges or cruising along the reef, while the majestic Humphead Wrasse (Napoleon) (Cheilinus undulatus) is a regular presence.
