A coral and macro dive near Malapascua

Lapus Lapus offers a different focus from Malapascua’s offshore shark dives: reef formations and small animals to look for at a slower pace. Sea Explorers places the site on the island’s northwestern side and describes rocks, small canyons and soft corals. Thresher Shark Divers also highlights hard and soft coral, with frogfish, mantis shrimp and cuttlefish among its reported subjects. These are operator accounts, not promises of an encounter or confirmation of today’s reef condition.

Which route and depth are planned?

The published depth figures describe different things. Thresher Shark Divers gives Lapus Lapus an 18 m depth heading and describes a coral-garden finish around 8 m. The PADI entry, contributed by Sea Explorers Malapascua, lists a maximum of 22 m. An operator’s depth heading does not necessarily identify the deepest part of a reef, so these figures should not be collapsed into a single independently surveyed range. Ask which section the boat will visit and what depth the guide intends for your group.

Published travel estimates are also operator-specific: Thresher Shark Divers lists about five minutes from its shop, while Sea Explorers describes approximately ten minutes from its centre. Neither estimate guarantees the duration of your departure or the conditions on the day.

Current and diver experience

Ocean Vida’s named-site description warns of strong currents. Sea Explorers says Lapus Lapus can suit beginners as well as experienced divers, depending on current and sea conditions. A beginner-friendly description therefore does not mean every route or departure is suitable for a new diver. Discuss your recent experience and the planned route with the operator. PADI’s list of useful training is guidance about courses, not evidence of a universal certification requirement for the site.

What the historical reef survey shows

People and the Sea’s 2018 monitoring report includes a named Lapus Lapus survey station. Its sampling depth was 6–8 m; that is the survey area’s depth range, not the limits of the whole dive site. The report recorded 76.7% total coral cover and 6.7% hard-coral cover at Lapus Lapus in 2018, describing a reef dominated by soft corals. Those dated measurements provide historical context and must not be read as a present-day condition report.

Confirm the site before departure

Sea Explorers lists Lapus-Lapus, Lapus II and Lapus Pinnacle separately. Confirm the name and route when booking rather than assuming these nearby names identify the same dive. The map point retained here matches the historical survey station; it does not establish a current boat entry or mooring. Ask the local operator about current access, any applicable fees, visibility and the day’s sea conditions. Local corrections and dated observations can help improve this partial guide.
