As one of Dauin's four municipal sanctuaries, alongside Mainit, Dauin, and Masaplod, Luca Marine Sanctuary is a protected no-take zone, ensuring a thriving underwater ecosystem for divers to explore.

Dive Conditions and Site Features

This beginner-friendly dive site offers a maximum depth of 19 m, making it ideal for Open Water certified divers and those looking for a relaxed exploration. Divers will find mild currents, allowing for comfortable and unhurried dives. The water temperature in Dauin typically ranges from a warm 26°C to 30°C, providing pleasant conditions year-round.

Luca Marine Sanctuary is a captivating blend of reef and muck diving. The site boasts clear waters and healthy coral cover, complemented by several artificial reef structures, including reef cones and even some wrecks, which have been strategically added to create a rich and diverse habitat. This combination makes it a fantastic location for underwater photographers, whether you're focusing on wide-angle shots of the reef or macro subjects hidden in the sand.

Marine Life Encounters

Prepare to be delighted by the abundant marine life that calls Luca Marine Sanctuary home. Divers can regularly encounter graceful Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) as they forage among the corals and seagrass. The vibrant reefs are teeming with assorted Butterflyfish (Chaetodon sp.) and the striking Regal Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus). Keep an eye out for the charming Barrier Reef Anemonefish (Amphiprion akindynos) nestled within their anemone hosts.

Beyond the reef, the muck areas reveal a treasure trove of macro critters. Divers may spot flamboyant cuttlefish, various species of frogfish (Dauin is renowned as a "Frogfish Capital"), ghost pipefish, moray eels, and a variety of colorful shrimps and crabs, including coral crabs and porcelain crabs.

Safety and Recommendations

While Luca Marine Sanctuary is a generally calm dive site, we advise divers to be mindful of boat traffic, particularly when entering and exiting the water, as this is a common hazard in coastal areas. Additionally, although the maximum depth is manageable for Open Water divers, we recommend monitoring your depth and air consumption to ensure a safe and enjoyable dive. The sanctuary's protected status means fishing and boating are prohibited within its boundaries, contributing to the pristine environment and abundant marine life.
