Wreck · Reef

The Lusong Gunboat dive site offers an unforgettable journey into history and a vibrant marine ecosystem, making it a favorite among divers of all levels in Coron. This Japanese warship, likely a patrol boat or submarine chaser, met its fate on September 24, 1944, during a major U.S. aerial strike that targeted the Imperial Japanese fleet hiding among the Calamian Islands. Driven into the shallows of Lusong Island, its rusted stern still breaks the surface at extreme low tide, a haunting reminder of its past.
Divers will find this site incredibly accessible, with a maximum depth of 15 m, and parts of the wreck starting as shallow as 5 m at the bow. The gunboat, approximately 35–40 m long, lies at a sharp angle on a sloping reef, creating a fascinating underwater landscape. The superstructure has largely collapsed, transforming the interior into a bright, airy swim-through environment rather than requiring true penetration. This makes it an ideal introduction to wreck diving for those with an Open Water certification, while freedivers and snorkelers can also enjoy unparalleled views of the wreck from the surface and within its shallower sections.
Conditions at the Lusong Gunboat are typically mild, with calm waters and light to no current, ensuring a relaxing and enjoyable experience. The water temperature generally ranges from a comfortable 26°C to 30°C, perfect for extended exploration. Visibility is often excellent, ranging from 10-20 m, especially around noon when sunlight bathes the wreck, highlighting its intricate details and the marine life that now calls it home.
Over the decades, the Lusong Gunboat has transformed into a thriving artificial reef, acting as an iron anchor for a massive, flourishing hard-coral garden. Divers can expect to encounter a rich diversity of marine life. We frequently spot vibrant Six-banded Angelfish, various species of Butterflyfish, and a multitude of colorful Nudibranchs. Keep an eye out for Great Barracuda patrolling the perimeter, and the ever-charming Clownfish nestled in their anemones. Beyond the fact sheet, we also often observe schools of damselfish and chromis fluttering above the corals, lionfish lazily resting in the shade, and even well-camouflaged stonefish, so remember to look but not touch.
While the Lusong Gunboat is a beginner-friendly dive site, divers should be aware of potential hazards. Boat traffic in the area requires vigilance, and the wreck itself contains sharp metal edges that necessitate careful buoyancy control. We recommend maintaining a safe distance from exposed metal to prevent accidental cuts or scrapes.
Whether you're exploring history, marveling at the vibrant corals, or simply enjoying a shallow, sunlit dive, the Lusong Gunboat offers a unique and memorable experience for snorkelers, freedivers, and certified Open Water divers alike.
