About This Dive Site

Napantao Marine Sanctuary: a protected wall dive

Napantao is a reef destination in Barangay Napantao, Southern Leyte. The provincial tourism office describes a protected coral wall with large gorgonian fans and opportunities for diving, macro photography and snorkeling. Peter's Dive Resort places the sanctuary across Sogod Bay on the Panaon side and describes a horseshoe-shaped wall.

Wall depth and conditions

The province describes the wall dropping to 50 m; Peter's describes a broader wall feature extending from 7 to 70 m. These descriptions do not establish the same surveyed endpoints or a recommended dive profile. Agree the specific route and depth with the operator instead of treating the deepest terrain as a target. Peter's also reports upwellings and strong-current conditions here.

Planning a visit

Ask which section will be used, how the group will enter and exit, and whether current conditions suit your experience. Confirm sanctuary access arrangements before departure. This partial guide does not establish a universal certification minimum, current timetable or guaranteed wildlife encounter.

North Wall, South Wall and the house reef

Ara Juan’s 2021 first-person account distinguishes three experiences at Napantao. Her North Wall outing continued beyond the wall onto a hard-coral slope. A repeat dive there encountered weaker current and allowed closer observation of small subjects. On the following day, she found the South Wall calmer, while explicitly leaving open whether timing or reef shape explained the difference.

That comparison is a record of individual dives, not evidence that the south is always easier. Her North Wall photographs and observations include gorgonians, sponges and smaller animals, with frogfish, a turtle and nudibranchs reported during the more leisurely repeat. Large pelagic visitors did not appear on the first outing; their possible presence should not define the booking.

Juan describes the house reef in front of the former Coral Cay base as a sandy slope with hard and soft corals, recalling earlier shore dives and snorkeling there. She did not dive it on that return trip. Its shallower habitat is therefore a separate historical account, not a substitute description for either wall route.

Different subjects along the wall

Peter’s Dive Resort reports soft corals near the wall top, overhangs along its face and schools including fusiliers and snappers. Its account contrasts current-driven fish activity with calmer opportunities to examine the wall’s corals. Those observations help explain why two visits can emphasize different subjects: a drifting fish-filled outing and a slower look at the attached reef life need not follow the same profile. Neither description establishes a fixed itinerary or a recent ecological survey of the sanctuary’s present condition.
