Thila · Pinnacle · Overhang · Drop-off

Welcome to Nassimo Thila, a renowned dive site located in the North Malé Atoll (Kaafu Atoll) of the Maldives. This spectacular underwater pinnacle is celebrated for its dramatic topography and vibrant marine biodiversity, making it a favorite among experienced divers.
Nassimo Thila is an oval-topped, protected thila, rising dramatically from the ocean floor. Its crown typically sits around 8 to 12 meters below the surface, while the dive site extends to a maximum depth of 30 meters. The northern edge of the thila bristles with impressive pinnacles, turrets, and pillars, where the currents are often strongest. Here, divers will find spectacular soft corals and huge sea fans thriving in the nutrient-rich flow. A unique feature of Nassimo Thila is a section of reef that has calved away, creating coral-blanketed boulders down to approximately 30 meters and a fascinating maze of overhangs and crevices to explore. These overhangs are often adorned with a thick layer of beautiful blue soft corals.
Nassimo Thila is classified as an advanced dive site, primarily due to the presence of strong currents. We recommend that divers hold an Advanced Open Water certification and possess good buoyancy control, along with experience in drift diving, to safely navigate the site. The water temperature here is consistently warm, ranging from 27°C to 30°C, offering comfortable diving conditions year-round. While diving is possible throughout the year, the best conditions, with clearer visibility and more predictable currents, are typically found during the northeast monsoon from December to April.
The strong currents at Nassimo Thila act as a magnet for a diverse array of marine life. Divers can expect to encounter impressive pelagic species such as the majestic Humphead Wrasse (Napoleon), powerful Great Barracuda, and fast-moving Dogtooth Tuna. The site is also known for its resident Grey Reef Sharks and occasionally, divers may spot Tawny Nurse Sharks resting in the shelter of the overhangs. Keep an eye out for graceful Spotted Eagle Rays gliding by. The thila is also home to schooling fish like Black Snapper, Bluestripe Snapper, and fusiliers, which often form dense clouds. Hawksbill Turtles are frequently observed, often feeding or resting near coral formations. Lucky divers might also spot various moray eels, including honeycomb, giant, bearded, and undulated species, along with redtooth triggerfish and basslets.
The primary hazards at Nassimo Thila are the strong currents and the potential for depth, with coral boulders reaching down to 30 meters. Divers should be proficient in current management and maintain excellent buoyancy control. Boat traffic is also a consideration, as this is a popular mooring site. While the overhangs and crevices offer exciting exploration, they constitute an overhead environment, requiring appropriate awareness and training.
Nassimo Thila is a protected marine area, emphasizing the importance of responsible diving practices to preserve its pristine beauty.
