About This Dive Site
Padre Burgos Pier: a source-attributed night-dive guide
Padre Burgos Castle Resort describes night diving at the Padre Burgos town pier in Southern Leyte. Its guide highlights opportunities to look for small marine subjects, including seahorses, frogfish and nudibranchs. These are operator-reported possibilities, not a promise of sightings on your dive.
Plan the visit with a local operator
Before booking, confirm whether diving is currently permitted, the available time slot, entry and exit arrangements, and the route the guide intends to use. Ask what night-diving experience and equipment are expected and whether the plan suits your experience.
What this partial guide does not establish
The reviewed pier section does not establish a reliable maximum depth, year-round visibility range or current public access schedule. Regional water-temperature and seasonal claims should not be treated as measurements at the pier. Request a current briefing instead of relying on the previous blanket beginner or clear-water description. This record preserves the existing site identity; it is not a newly surveyed route or a report of recent sightings.
Access days and the fishing agreement
Two unrelated sources describe a three-nights-a-week arrangement. FeetDoTravel, who dived with Peter's Dive Resort and published in February 2019, write that the pier is a working jetty with boat traffic by day and local fishing at night, that divers and fishing lines do not mix, and that a local agreement therefore allows diving on Monday, Wednesday and Friday only, with a 100 peso per person sanctuary fee. A blog that links to Sogod Bay Scuba Resort, in a post whose address carries a January 2009 date, likewise names Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and says three local operators dived the site regularly at that time. Both are dated statements of a local arrangement; confirm the current schedule and fee before planning a visit.
Depth, visibility and entry
The reported depth is shallow but inconsistent. Sogod Bay Scuba Resort's current map data, captured on 7 October 2026, lists 3–18 metres, all levels, a 10-minute boat ride and the tags muck, macro and night; the resort-linked 2009-dated post gives a maximum of around 5 metres and visibility of 15–20 metres. These come from the same operator at different dates and are not reconciled here. Entry from the town is described twice: a PADI blog post from February 2020 recounts wading in from the slippery steps of the harbour with torch and compass, and a ScubaBoard trip report from April 2010 notes the jetty was thirty seconds from the writer's pension house. The resort's 2019 listing on Bluewater Dive Travel calls the jetty one of its two first-class shallow night dives.
What divers report at night
Dive Happy's Sogod Bay guide, updated after an April 2024 visit, calls it the "world famous in Southern Leyte" night dive and lists seahorses, snake eels and stargazers living among the town's debris. FeetDoTravel treat the trash as habitat, advise looking inside shoes, tyres and bottles, photographed stargazers, a devil scorpionfish and a juvenile painted frogfish, and cut fishing line from a stargazer's mouth. The 2009-dated post lists seahorses, frogfish, stargazers, reptilian eels, blue-ringed octopus, nudibranchs, flying gurnards and squid and warns of rubbish. A LAMAVE account by Gonzalo Araujo of a January 2020 Philippine Siren trip calls it arguably one of the best night dives in the Philippines; the 2020 PADI post says the dive attracts photographers hunting rare critters and names stargazers, giant frogfish and seahorses; and two German reviews on taucher.net, from March 2013 and February 2015, single out the pier night dive as a highlight of stays at San Roque and Padre Burgos. These are dated observations from different visits, not a current species inventory.
