This small, uninhabited island, located approximately 2-4 kilometers off Panagsama Beach in the Tañon Strait, is a vibrant marine sanctuary renowned for its dramatic topography and abundant marine life. The Cathedral: A Divine Descent

The marquee feature of Pescador Island is undoubtedly "The Cathedral," a spectacular vertical cavern located on the island's western or northwestern side. Divers will find the main entrance to this awe-inspiring swim-through at a depth of around 28 to 30 meters. As we navigate inside, the chimney rises to approximately 16-18 meters, where shafts of sunlight penetrate through openings, creating a breathtaking "stained glass" effect that gives the cavern its name. This unique overhead environment requires excellent buoyancy control and awareness, making it a thrilling experience for those prepared.

Walls, Reefs, and Currents

Beyond The Cathedral, Pescador Island is encircled by stunning vertical walls and drop-offs that plunge past 60 meters, in some areas reaching depths of 65 meters. The reef top typically starts at a shallow 3-10 meters, providing a vibrant coral garden before the dramatic descent. These walls are adorned with a rich tapestry of hard and soft corals, including black coral trees, massive barrel sponges, and gorgonian sea fans. Currents here are variable, often flowing from south to north, which makes for exhilarating drift dives along the wall.

Encountering Marine Life

Pescador Island is a hotspot for diverse marine life. Divers can frequently encounter Green Sea Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles gracefully gliding along the reef or resting on ledges. Keep an eye out for Whitetip Reef Sharks patrolling the deeper sections or resting in crevices. The dive site is also known for its macro life, with patient divers often spotting elusive Frogfish, nudibranchs, and scorpionfish camouflaged against the corals. While the famous Moalboal sardine run is primarily located closer to Panagsama Beach, schools of sardines and other pelagic species like jackfish and barracuda are frequently seen around Pescador Island. Lucky divers might even have a rare encounter with a majestic Whale Shark, with sightings reportedly increasing in recent years.

Conditions and Conservation

The water temperature around Pescador Island is consistently warm, ranging from 26°C to 30°C year-round, with average temperatures typically between 27°C and 29°C. Visibility is generally excellent, often exceeding 30 meters. As a protected marine sanctuary, Pescador Island helps preserve its extraordinary biodiversity, and a marine sanctuary fee is usually included in dive tour packages to support these conservation efforts.
