Nestled off Padar Island's wave-beaten southern tip, Pillarsteen is a dive site renowned for its dramatic underwater topography. Often described as South Komodo's architectural dive, it presents an intricate maze of colossal rock pillars, deep canyons, majestic arches, and captivating tunnels. This extraordinary landscape has been sculpted over millennia by the relentless surge of the Indian Ocean, creating a truly unique diving experience. Divers will find this an advanced dive site, requiring an Advanced Open Water certification to safely explore its depths.

Diving Conditions and Topography

Pillarsteen offers a thrilling adventure with a typical depth range of 10 m to 35 m, though advanced divers may explore deeper areas towards 40 m. The water temperature here is distinctly cooler than other parts of Komodo, ranging from 22°C to 26°C, due to nutrient-rich upwellings from the deep Indian Ocean. This cooler water contributes to the site's vibrant soft coral growth. Currents at Pillarsteen are variable and can be strong, often accompanied by significant surge, particularly in exposed areas. We recommend staying close to your instructor or guide and being mindful of potential downcurrents.

The topography is the undeniable star here. On the west side, a magnificent wall descends, adorned with a spectacular display of yellow-orange soft corals and gorgonians, before gradually transitioning into a sloping reef. The site is riddled with fascinating caves and swim-throughs, which provide shelter for dense clouds of small reef fish. A highlight for many divers is a vertical chimney, carved by the ocean's power, which offers a unique overhead environment to ascend, adding to the site's adventurous character. Exploring these crevices and low-light areas is enhanced by bringing a dive torch.

Marine Life Encounters

While the dramatic reefscapes take center stage, Pillarsteen is also teeming with fascinating marine life, especially species adapted to its cooler, nutrient-rich waters. Divers can encounter striking Fire Urchins (Asthenosoma varium) and vibrant Yellow Sea Cucumbers (Colochirus robustus) thriving amidst the corals. Look out for the elegant Six-banded Angelfish (Pomacanthus sexstriatus), schools of Fusiliers (Caesio spp.) darting along the reef slope, and the distinctive Yellow Boxfish (Ostracion cubicus).

The deeper sections and the blue water attract larger inhabitants, including the elusive Midnight Snapper (Macolor macularis), majestic Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas), and the impressive Giant Moray (Gymnothorax javanicus) peeking from crevices. Keep an eye out for Whitetip Reef Sharks (Triaenodon obesus) patrolling the currents. Other reported sightings include various nudibranchs, scorpionfish, trevally, glassfish, lobsters, and even the occasional octopus or bamboo shark.

Hazards and Recommendations

Due to its exposed location and dynamic conditions, Pillarsteen presents several hazards, including strong currents, surge, and the overhead environment of its caves and tunnels. The cooler water temperatures also necessitate appropriate thermal protection, such as a 3-5mm full wetsuit. As a remote dive site, preparedness and diving with experienced local instructors are paramount. Despite these challenges, the unparalleled topography and unique marine life make Pillarsteen an unforgettable dive for certified advanced divers.
