Sabang Wrecks: Puerto Galera's Macro Wonderland

Nestled directly off the bustling shores of Sabang Beach in Puerto Galera, the Sabang Wrecks dive site is a premier destination for macro enthusiasts and beginner divers alike. This captivating underwater playground features three intentionally scuttled vessels—one small steel yacht and two rapidly decomposing wooden boats—resting on a sandy slope adjacent to a shallow seagrass bed. Decades beneath the waves have transformed these wrecks into vibrant artificial reefs, adorned with a kaleidoscope of colourful sponges, sea squirts, and anemones, providing a crucial nursery and shelter for a remarkable array of cryptic reef species.

Diving Conditions and Certification

The Sabang Wrecks offer a comfortable diving experience, with depths typically ranging from 18 to 22 meters, making it an excellent site for those with an Open Water certification. Divers will find generally mild currents, though conditions can vary with tidal changes. Water temperatures in Puerto Galera usually range from 27°C to 30°C during the warmer months of April to November, and between 19°C and 24°C from December to mid-March, ensuring pleasant dives year-round. Visibility here can be excellent, often ranging from 15 to 30 meters.

Encountering Marine Life

This dive site is a treasure trove for macro photographers and keen-eyed divers. We can expect to encounter the elusive Frogfish (Antennariidae spp.), including giant, painted, and warty varieties, often perfectly camouflaged among the sponges and corals. Keep an eye out for the delicate Ornate Ghost Pipefish (Solenostomus paradoxus) and the charming Common (Yellow) Seahorse (Hippocampus kuda) hiding in plain sight.

Divers will also frequently spot foraging Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) grazing in the adjacent seagrass beds. Beyond the star macro subjects, the wrecks teem with other fascinating creatures, including schools of batfish, moray eels, cardinalfish, various shrimps, gobies, and pufferfish. Look closely on the sandy bottom for sea pens, anemones, flounder, and mantis shrimp. The site is also known for sightings of lionfish, rock cods, and even shy octopuses. For those who enjoy night diving, the Sabang Wrecks transform, revealing hermit crabs, sea slugs, stargazers, and snake eels.

Potential Hazards and Recommendations

While generally a beginner-friendly dive site, divers should be mindful of potential hazards. Due to its proximity to Sabang Beach, there can be boat traffic in the area, so we recommend deploying a Submersible Marker Buoy (SMB) when in shallower sections. Additionally, the decaying wrecks may have sharp metal edges, so maintaining good buoyancy and situational awareness is crucial.
